Gamification And Africa’s Emerging Sports Business Landscape
I was one of the speakers at the 3rd African Gaming Expo that took place at the Eko Hotels in Lagos, a few days ago. I attended on the last day of the 3-day event that I never knew existed until I received an invitation to be a participant a few weeks ago.
The expo was an incredibly fascinating experience. It was a blast. The expo environment was jam packed with stakeholders in the sports sector from across the African continent, each sharing experiences, telling success stories, highlighting challenges, but generally projecting a future that takes Africa’s participation on the global industry to new heights of prosperity.
From Modest Beginnings To Gamification Growth
I told the audience my own modest story; how only 30 years ago, the sports industry in Africa almost didn’t exist except broadcast rights, some sponsorships and consultancy.
This past decade particularly, however, smart young entrepreneurs have found a way to combine the passion that Africans have for football, athletics and basketball, the fanatical followership they attract, and the power of technology to create a new world where digital platforms create new games in betting, games, e-sports and technology.
Africa’s Sports Business Evolution And Global Gap
I told them how I stumbled through the sports business and was humbled when I was invited to Harvard Business School as a resource person only to get there and found that my ‘expertise’ as one of the pioneers of the industry in Nigeria amounted to nothing and that Africa was still in the dark ages of the sports business.

The challenge was how Africa would build the systems that drive the love of sport to generate jobs, investment, and sustainable economic growth.
Yet, that was only a few years ago, at the dawn of the 1990s.
Rise Of Gaming Platforms And Gamification Impact
Even when the first National sports lottery commission in Nigeria was established, the business could not lift off the tarmac of success for cultural, religious and other reasons until ‘Baba Ijebu’ bought it over and opened the lid of new possibilities. It was a birth into a new world, the world we are now all in!
Some 30 years after those times, the world is announcing with glee that the Sports business is presently valued at over $600 billion Dollars, and although the Sport industry in the continent is still lagging behind, Africa is becoming a major contributor through the gaming ecosystem. Most of the prosperity still lies ahead.
Gamification Driving Digital Engagement In Sports
The industry has expanded beyond broadcasting rights and sponsorships to include sports analytic using engagement technologies and gaming platforms.
The gaming platforms and technology, particularly, capture the imagination the most – the ability and power to combine the power of gaming machines with sports on a platform – through fantasy, predictions, e-sports and digital tech . The name of the new game is GAMIFICATION.
This has attracted its own huge demography of young fans and their relationship with mobile technology, and brilliant young entrepreneurs and innovation geniuses.
Africa’s Untapped Potential In Sports Economy
Across Africa, sport now thrives far beyond stadiums. Even though the talent is overflowing and despite exporting world-class talent, Africa still captures only a small share of the new business sector.

Technology is now changing that equation. Digital engagement platforms, mobile connectivity, and sports gaming ecosystems are transforming how fans interact with sport.
Gamification, Betting Boom And Economic Opportunities
Sport betting and gaming represent one of the fastest growing sectors on the sports industry, generating more than $200 billion annually in gross gaming revenue. Gamification applies gaming mechanics (competition, prediction, scoring systems, and rewards) to sports engagement, allowing fans to interact with sports in new ways.

It has already reshaped the sports economies in North America, Europe, and Asia that have become models that offer a new pathway from passion to prosperity for us in Africa.
Nigeria seems to have decoded the complexities in the business and is now flying the kite of the success of the industry in Africa.
Youth Demographics Fuel Gamification And Fan Engagement
Africa is the ‘youngest’ continent, with more than 60 percent of its population under the age of 25. That demography’s passion for Sport is also appetite for developing talented athletes, fuel for Gamification and Fan Engagement, and for transforming spectators into active participants before, during, and after matches.
Africa’s Sports Economy forecasts suggest the sports betting market could grow from $3.5 billion in 2021 to nearly $19 billion by 2030. If the trend continues, Africa could approach a $30-billion regulated sports gaming market by 2035.
Policy, Regulation And The Future Of Sports Business
Governments must unlock this opportunity by paying more attention to regulating it, providing digital infrastructure development, investing in youth sports, encouraging cross-border regulatory cooperation and securing private-sector partnerships
Africa stands at a pivotal moment in the evolution of the sports industry. The continent possesses the talent, the audience, and the technological momentum required today to build a thriving sports economy. By embracing gamification responsibly and strategically, Africa can transform sport from a cultural passion into a powerful engine of economic development.

The future of sport will be shaped not only by athletes on the field but by the digital platforms, data systems, and engagement technologies that surround the game.
Africa is ready for that future.
And the future is here.
Now, the time has come for Nigeria to lead Africa and harness its talent and develop a huge sports economy.
