I Respected Rohr’s Decision To Place Me On Standby For AFCON Qualifiers- Onuachu

Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu has dismissed reports that he was disappointed after been placed on standby by the team coach, Gernot Rohr ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho.

The lanky forward, who made a brilliant debut by scoring a stunning volley against Egypt in an international friendly on March 26, 2019, told a Lagos-based radio station that he respected Rohr’s decision to place him on stand-by.

Onuachu assured that he will give his best if given the opportunity to face the Squirrels of Benin and Crocodile of Lesotho.

“I did not feel disappointed, because I already spoke to the Coach, he called me and he told me that I’ve been amazing at my Club and he gave me reasons, which I understand because of course we have a lot of football players all over the world.

“The way he gave me a chance to come to prove myself against Egypt of course other players are opportune to be given the same chance. He explained that to me, which I thought was a good idea.

“So, when he explained I told him I’ll keep working hard and he is the Coach and knows what’s best for the team; it’s your decision and I thoroughly understand why I was not on the first list.”

Something tells me these crop of SE players will go places. We’re not seeing the arrogance and opposition front players as before. And kudos to Rohr for his M M skills, communicating with players and keeping them in the loop.

  • It was never a mistake.Paul’s input has been next to nothing. If he cannot score a goal does not mean that he cannot control, pass or even harass the opponent’s defenders. His present coach at Genk was his coach at Midtjylland.Paul was not even among the first eleven until his coach from Denmark started managing the team.If Paul can only perform under just this manager, then he really has to wake up and improve on his all round play.@Obidee,please don’t allow emotions to cloud your sense of Judgement.

    • Pls bro, try and get your facts right. The current coach of RC Genk (John van den Brom), have never coached any club in Denmark. Infact, he spent all his coaching career in Netherlands before joining Genk.

  • … shouldn’t be able to pass**

  • Atleast u have learn ur lessons and i believe if u are given opportunity against lesotho you’ll definitely utilize it but for now let’s concentrate with the ones that have been giving us result.
    Thankiu….

    …SHALOM…

  • [email protected] read the info from a sports site(i can’t remember which one it is) and i didn’t bother to check it out.John van den from is actually Dutch and did most of his coaching in Netherlands but was the coach of Anderlecht for 2 years.
This does not change my opinion about Paul Onuachu’s performances for the Super Eagles. That he has failed to score is not my issue, but no link up play,no chemistry of any sort between him and the rest of the team on the field.Any time he is on the field it is as if we are playing short of one man.He has gotten a lot of chances,it is okay for the coach to try someone else.
