The 32-year-old Croatian enters the final 12 months of his deal at the Etihad Stadium ready to fight for his spot.
He stated that hearing the club counts on him was vital, shifting his full focus back to performing on the pitch.
“I didn’t feel question marks from them,” said Kovacic.
“I spoke with them, they count on me, which was important to hear from them.
“And now for the players it’s always on you to show your best version, because if you’re playing good, the manager will put you first.”

Meanwhile, Maresca offered a lukewarm update on Kovacic’s future after Saturday’s friendly vs. Inter, stating: “Mateo is our player, until the day he is here I will try all my best.
“It’s my duty to try to help players give their best. If he’s here, I’m happy and we will continue to work with him.”
Recall that Kovacic joined Manchester City from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and has won the Premier League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup across three seasons at the Etihad Stadium, establishing himself as one of the most technically accomplished operators in the club’s squad during a period of significant transition.
