Melville Says Tigers Players Still In England Contention

RFU head Nigel Melville says Leicester Tigers’ English stars do not necessarily have to leave the club in the event of relegation.

The Tigers have many household names in their ranks, including England’s Jonny May, Manu Tuilagi and George Ford, but are having a poor season at domestic level.

They are 10th in the Gallagher Premiership, five points above bottom of the table Newcastle Falcons with five matches left. Most of their big hitters do not have straight relegation clauses in their contracts, whereby they can terminate their deals at Welford Road.

However, Melville says even if they were to drop out of the top-flight, it would not change their standing at international level and they would still be available for selection. “Going down shouldn’t be a reason to abandon ship,” Melville told BBC Sport. “I think you should be coming back up with your club and making a statement. “They are committed and loyal to their clubs.

If they did come down, they would come back up because they would make sure they do.”
