Mohammed who had earlier defeated Balogun in the finals of the Cassa Garri tournament at the Lagos Tennis club in Onikan, Lagos will move to a career-best fourth in the state rankings on Friday and become the highest ranked teenager in the state according to the current rankings of the Lagos State Tennis Association.

“At the beginning, I was a little bit searching for my game still in the first set but when I got into my rhythm, I think I played really solid, really smart,” Mohammed told a news conference after the match.

“Maybe a little bit unlucky in the first set which ended 4-6 but I fought back well but sometimes you need a little luck. I’m just happy how I was able to finish the match.”

It was Mohammed’s fourth major victory in 2019 and she was delighted at it.

“I just feel really happy. I am really proud of this week. I played some good tennis and it is just all amazing things,” Mohammed added.

This is one huge sport that continues to lag behind in Nigeria. Tennis is huge outside Africa. Perhaps someone can start a tennis academy in Nigeria? If we start a good one soon, I see us producing top players who can perhaps win grand slams within a decade. The talent is always there, it is lack of exposure and opportunity that is the big wahala.
