Former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana stated that Nigeria must use consecutive World Cup absences to build sustainable administrative structures, establish a clear playing identity, and prioritize professional competence over sentiment when appointing football leaders for long-term success.

Recall that Nigeria has made six appearances at the FIFA World Cup since making a memorable debut in 1994, though the nation has failed to qualify for the last two tournaments in 2022 and 2026.

Eagles Lack A Recognizable Tactical Philosophy

However, in a chat with Brila FM, the former Hull City star noted that the Super Eagles currently lack a recognizable tactical philosophy or discernible playing style flowing from age-grade levels up to the senior team.

Olofinjana also stated that Nigeria’s natural abundance of football talent has historically created a false sense of security, resulting in poor preparation.

“I like a lot of what is happening in the backend of not going to two World Cups because I think if we had gone to the two, we will still be where we are,” Olofinjana said.

“Nigeria is such a wealthy country, a lot of the time, we solve all these problems without any preparation. It has given us an opportunity to reflect on our national team, what are we doing? What does the green-white-green mean?

“The Super Eagles shirt is no longer heavy, it used to be heavy when we wore it.”

“A lot of what they do when they wear the shirt is self-motivation and collective responsibility. If anybody is going to be in the World Cup, they have to know what they are doing.”
