The former Udoji United and Go Ahead Eagles of Holland centre-back said the improved officiating has contributed to the increasing number of away victories recorded by clubs this 2025/2026 NPFL season.
“Shagari” believes the organisers of the Nigerian top flight deserve commendation for the positive changes witnessed in the league.
“What I think has changed in the NPFL this season is officiating,” Obiekwu said during a exclusive interview with Completesports.com.
“The referees have been doing a very good job and this has been very visible.
“Since last season, officiating has improved. Teams now go away and win comfortably. It’s a good advert for the league and kudos to the league managers.”
Rangers, Rivers United Still Battling For NPFL Title
The former U-23 Olympic Eagles defender also spoke on the NPFL title race involving eight-time champions Rangers and two-time winners Rivers United.
According to Obiekwu, the battle remains open heading into the final two matches of the campaign, although he believes Rangers are still in pole position.
“As regards the Rangers and Rivers United title race, I think it is similar to what we have in the English Premier League between Arsenal and Manchester City,” he added.

“But certainly, it is Rangers’ league to lose. Rangers lost grip earlier, but in the last 10 games they rediscovered their rhythm, which explains why they are where they are now on the table.
“Rivers United equally stand a good chance. But in all of this, I think the last two games will decide everything. Let’s wait and see what happens in the final two games over the next two weeks.”p
Title Race Set For Dramatic Finish
With only two rounds of matches remaining, the race for the NPFL crown is expected to go down to the wire as Rangers and Rivers United continue their fierce battle for supremacy.
