Over 300 Players Storm Lagos For Fourth Azimuth Junior Tennis Competition

More than 300 players have reportedly registered to participate at the weeklong Azimuth Shipping Lines Limited Junior Tennis Championship taking place at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

The players who came into Lagos from different parts of the country, will be participating in the U-12, U-14 and U-16 categories for both boys and girls.

Top junior youngsters from Benue, Kogi, Rivers, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, among others, are already in Lagos for the fourth edition of the tournament sponsored by Captain Stephen Owolabi Martins, MD/CEO of Azimuth Shipping Lines Limited.

Tournament Director, Richard Inyang, informed journalists in Lagos that the tournament is fast becoming one of the biggest juniors in Nigeria, especially because of the size as well as the bumper package the organizers have for the participants.

After the screening exercise on Monday, the tournament officially served off with the U-12 girls and boys playing their matches, as they have most entrants into the competition.

“We will do all we can to get to the semis for the U-12s today because of the size of the draw for the players,” Kayode Savage, the tournament’s Chief Referee, stated.

“Losing Quarterfinalists will be going home with N20,000, Losing Semifinalists will be going home with N30,000 then the Runners-up will be going home with N50,000 while the winner will go home with N100,000.

“The cash prizes are in form of education grants to the players, though, because we don’t give out cash to junior players,” the Tournament Director further explained.
