Roy Shines As England Crush Afghanistan

Jason Roy hammered a scintillating unbeaten 89 as England thrashed Afghanistan by nine wickets in their final World Cup warm-up game.

With just three days to go before the Three Lions take on South Africa in the 50-over curtain-raiser, Eoin Morgan’s men were looking for a decent run-out and confidence boost and that is exactly what they got.

Having opted to field first, Morgan saw his bowlers dismantle the Afghanistan batting line-up as Jofra Archer took three wickets to enhance his chances of playing against the Proteas.

Part-time spinner Joe Root also claimed three scalps as the Asian outfit were all out for just 160 in just 38.4 overs.

Mohammad Nabi top-scored with 44 while Najibullah Zadran hit 30 but it was a woeful effort from Gulbadin Naib’s side who were not helped by two run-outs.

The hosts got off to a flyer in their reply, with Jonny Bairstow out for 39 from just 22 deliveries, while Roy’s knock was made from 46 balls faced, with 11 fours and four sixes.

Root chipped in with 29 not out and, while England would have maybe have hoped for a bit more of a contest, they will now be raring to go against Faf du Plessis’s side.
