Karmichael Hunt seems set to miss out on a World Cup spot with Australia after sustaining a season-ending injury. The New South Wales Waratahs utility back had been hoping to force his way into Michael Cheika’s squad for the Rugby World Cup in Japan but a knee injury appears to have ended his chances.

Hunt sustained a knee injury in the first minute of a 23-15 loss to the Jaguares on Saturday and seems likely to miss the rest of the Super Rugby season. The 32-year-old has a suspected medial ligament injury, and if he doesn’t play again this term his chances of heading to Japan are almost certainly over.
“Yeah, I should imagine so, unless something remarkable happens,” Waratahs assistant coach Steve Tandy told reporters when asked if Hunt was out for the rest of the season. “It’s just really disappointing for Karmichael and the team.”
