Tway Happy With Fast Hawaii Start

Kevin Tway says he is delighted with how he played as he opened up a one-shot lead on day one of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

World number 89 Tway, who was unsure whether he would be taking part after skipping the pro-am due to illness, handled the windy conditions at the Plantation Course superbly as he staked an early claim for the PGA Tour title.

The American made seven birdies in a bogey-free display to move onto -7 for the tournament, building an early one-shot lead from Gary Woodland, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson.

Speaking about his performance, Tway was happy to have started so positively and he revealed the blustery conditions are something he is used too.

“I hit the ball well, kept the ball in play, made a few putts, controlled my ball in the wind,” he was quoted as saying by pgatour.com. “It’s windy where I’m from in Oklahoma so it’s kind of like I was at home. “Each shot’s difficult so you’re just focused on the trajectory and where I need to land it and where I need to miss it.”

Australian Marc Leishman is in sole possession of fifth on -5 after signing for a round of 68, whilst Rory McIlroy is a further stroke back on -4 alongside Jason Day, Andrew Putnam, Andrew Landry, Patton Kizzire and Bryson DeChambeau.
