In his post-match reaction on BT Sport show posted on the Premier League YouTube channel, Owen faulted Bassey’s movement in the lead-up to the goal.

“Look at the players, they are all marking here,” Owen said, analysing the goal in a video replay.

“This is Fabinho who’s here with Blind . And then apart from that, you’ve basically got everybody paired up and it’s Bassey, just watch it slowly.

“Bassey is actually keeping his eye on Matip and eventually, just look through the bodies, he’s [Bassey] the one closest to him [Matip] so it was his man, so as Rio [Ferdinand] said he simply doesn’t do enough. He lets him get a run on him and you can’t do that.”

Napoli who will play away to Rangers in the Group A’s second matchday-2 game tonight currently lead the pack on three points from two games. Liverpool are second on three points from two games, while Ajax are third also on three points from two matches. Rangers are bottom of the group, looking to bag their first point of the campaign from their tonight’s home game against Napoli.

Bassey has registered one assist from seven games in all competitions for Ajax this season.

Ajax are currently first in the Eredivisie (Dutch League) with 18 points from six games.
