USA Outclass Super Falcons 4-0 In Friendly Match

World champions United States of America maintained their superiority over the Super Falcons of Nigeria with a convincing 4-0 win in an international friendly game on Saturday, Completesports.com reports.

The game which was played inside the Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, was the first of two friendlies lined up between USA and the Falcons.

The USA have now won all seven meetings against the Falcons since their first clash at the 1999 women’s World Cup.

Falconets stars at the just concluded FIFA U-20 women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, Deborah Abiodun, Tosin Demehin and Rofiat Imuran made their debuts with the Falcons while Esther Onyenezide was benched.

Sophia Smith opened scoring for the USA in the 14th minute before Lindsay Horan doubled the lead on 25 minutes.

Smith got her second of the game in 45+1 minute to make it 3-0 in favour of the USA.

And in the 52nd minute Alex Morgan completed the rout by converting from the penalty spot to end the tie 4-0.

The two teams will meet again in another friendly billed for Tuesday, 6th September, at the Audi Field, Washington DC.

Our useless coach is using the players out of position, using Kanu in defence.

      • Footballfanatic 2 years ago

This fool called Waldrum has nothing to offer…..He continues to play Payne and Alozie as left and right full back when they are naturally offensive players, and he never even made an effort to try new players in that position….We can see that the in that the introduction of the younger players changed the tempo of the game…..Honestly going forward we need to weed out the old legs in the team. I honestly don’t expect anything great in the WC with this senseless coach

Let’s not deceive ourselves the Super Fslcons have never been in the same class as the USWT. The mstches are good lessons and no more.

  • Edoman 2 years ago

The standard here in USA is extremely high, they are the World campion, in fact, just too high for the falcons to handle. More so playing the Americans at home. It was nice to introduce the young ones into the team at this stage. I think the coach should be relieved of his Job after the World cup. Not now, as Omo9ja and cohorts may advocate at this time of preparations for the real-World cup.

So because they are USA we must lose woefully against them forever?

      • Codex 2 years ago

He won’t answer no need asking him but I wonder why this unqualified/clueless/rudderless coach of our falcons can’t coach this team coherently,no clarity at all, basics lacking on an individual scale and he’s still at the job.I know that international coaches work with limited time hence the inability to impose a set style of play but the plan has to be clear on a game by game basis, basic improvements must be seen and partnerships formed and these things are lacking also the staff must be equipped with data-tronics which helps the analysis phase which keeps the team in touch with modern football and then build from there. I wonder what blueprint the NFF technical director has put in place for our national teams and what the long term plans that are put in place or are they waiting for the next tournament?

        • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

By NFF technical director, do you mean Austin Eguavoen….? LMAOooo.

The one that said he cannot change tactics in the middle of a tournament…? Or the one that need Odion Ighalo to point out a change of tactics by Otto Addo to him….?

Please if na play stop am o.

          • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

…needed experienced players like Odion Ighalo or Ahmed Musa to point out….

  • I have said it before, if Nigeria does not sack this Waldrum of a coach, she is waiting for disaster at the world cup. In fact, falcon’s world cup performance under this Waldrum will be worse than their performance in 1991 when they first went to the world cup.

Falcon’s performance yesterday against USA was nothing short of horrible. Apart from playing most of the players out of position, Waldrum had no discernable game plan. No purposeful play or identifiable pattern of play.

The players on their own part are not helping matters. Yesterday, the falcon players where just running aimlessly on the pitch. Most of the time, ball watching and not knowing which of the USA players they where going to mark. The players were just kicking the ball aimlessly, unnecessarily trying to dribble 3 or 4 USA players, and not knowing how to position themselves.

In short, falcons performance yesterday was worse than their performance at the nations cup. How can a team be kicking ball into the air or playing long balls when they are not as tall as their opponent. You resort to aerial ball when you know that you have superior strength over your opponent. This Waldrum of a coach can’t instruct his players to put the ball on the ground. His refusal to play the players in their natural position is a sin that should not be overlooked. How can you be playing attackers as defenders and hoping to win matches? This is very annoying.

  • Five Retrospective Observations On Super Falcons’ Embarrassing 4:0 dismantling By The USA

You don’t go into a duel with behemoths like the all-conquering USA women’s soccer team with just a few hours of training without getting roasted – Nigeria’s Super Falcons did, and they were squashed like mashed potatoes.

With shoestring preparations, Nigeria’s women fell 4:0 to American cannon on the Saturday 3rd of September friendly which only served to forge a fresh ring into a recent chain of destitute results of four losses in six games (a telling affirmation of how colourless the Super Falcons have become).

This friendly, the first of a two-part series, started in predictable fashion with the Super Falcon on the proverbial back foot, looking disjointed and incoherent at the back, rudimentary in midfield whilst lacking either bark or bite up front. With Nigeria’s defence haemorrhaging pressure, it eventually came to breaking point quite early with Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan hammering home two well taken goals for the hosts in just 25 minutes.

Rather than rouse Nigeria from their slumber, the Americans rather pressed home their technical and tactical advantage with two further goals from the unstoppable Sophia Smith and then Alex Morgan from the penalty spot (admittedly the body check from Nicole Payne for the penalty could have been construed as negligible by other referees).

Thus the Super Falcons were ruthless impaled on a ‘four goals to nothing’ spear. Late flurries from Toni Payne, Michelle Alozie and Gift Monday only served to prove that the Falcons roused from their slumber after the ship had sailed.

This now leads me to my five brief observations on the encounter.

    Observations:

1.Trialling A New Formation: having largely dabbled into 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 constellations in prior engagements, the much maligned coach Randy Waldrum elected to switch horses to 4-2-3-1 on this occasion. This represented a departure from his prior philosophy of playing it safe against world class oppositions. My major issue with this was that he used an unfamiliar formation when his girls hadn’t had much time to practice and perfect the movements needed to make it work. Hence the Super Falcons were inarticulate, agricultural and incongruous in their play particularly early in the match. The defence lacked much leadership as it collapsed whilst trying to work out how to contain the rampaging Americans in this set up. The defensive midfield didn’t gel earlier on and the forward line of Monday, Ajide, Kanu and Onumanu played like strangers. They needed time to work out what worked for them individually and collectively to make the formation work but the USA weren’t going to be generous hence Nigeria was punished for carelessly experimenting against Gladiators.

2.Poor Player Selections: Another bête noire of mine was (again) the choice players in certain positions for his new formation. The wings – I think – could have benefited with Alozie and T. Payne on either side due to their attacking and defensive capabilities. In fact, Nigeria only started creating openings once these two players moved upwards. In this 4-2-3-1 formation, the wingers needed to be fluid and the centre attacking midfielder has to be a work-horse. The centre attacker has to be comfortable with hold up play and being isolated but I don’t think Waldrum selected or arranged his starting 11 to unlock the potentials inherent in this formation. Things improved with substitutions.

3.Limited Time To Prepare: In what has shamelessly become a staple of this abhorrent NFF administration, the Super Falcons arrived in the USA without sufficient time to really prime themselves for this high profile encounter. With no less than six fresh faces in the squad, the team needed more time to blood them in and blend them in time for this friendly match that was planned many days ago. I stand to be corrected but I think last week was the first time Randy Waldrum would be reuniting with many of his players after Nigeria’s last match in the Wafcon on the 22nd of July (a whole seven weeks ago). That is not good enough; no wonder the United States wiped the floor with the not-so-Super Falcons.

4.Continuation of Defensive Frailties: Against South Africa, Morocco and Zambia, we saw how Nigeria’s defence were at sixes and sevens. Again against USA over the weekend, they were all over the place. Lack of leadership; poorly executed routines; mundane attempts at clearances; easily succumbing in one on one situations; ineffective communication and inadequate support or cover from the attackers continue to be some of bane of Waldrum’s Falcons. The American will need to sort these issues out and fast if his team isn’t to return to Nigeria with a basket load of goals-conceived from next year’s World Cup.

5.Lack of Progress: Needless to say that the Super Falcons haven’t made any meaningful or appreciable progress in recent times. This is in part due to the NFF’s football management incompetence and also partly due to coach Randy Waldrum’s shortcomings. The American gaffer continues to play players out of position thereby debilitating their effectiveness and sabotage the effectiveness of his own formation. He sometimes seems confused on which formation to utilise for which occasion and his ladies do not always exhibit the sort of movements that will give them advantage of their oppositions. Nigerian women now sadly and embarrassingly plays second fiddle to the likes of South Africa on the continent while showing no signs of ever been able to upset the applecart of world female football. It is impossible to be fully invested in the Super Falcons due to the lamentable quality of football and depressing outcomes of recent matches. But the Nigerian blood in our veins and our undying coquettish affection towards the Super Falcons make us persevere.

I am starting to become ambivalent towards the retention of Waldrum as the head coach of the Super Falcons but for a large platoon of fans, their mind is made up – THE AMERICAN TACTICIAN MUST GO!

    • pompei 2 years ago

      Great post, Deo.
Should Waldrum stay, or should he go?
In Waldrum’s defense, working with this NFF is no stroll in the park. So for him to have qualified us for the world cup, with all the confusion, distractions, and hurry-scurry preparations, is a big plus in his favour. Who knows, they might even be owing him wages as we speak.
However, Waldrum’s tactical inflexibility has been exposed in several games, before, during, and after the recent Afcon, leading to significant doubt as to his ability to guide the SF to a good outing at the upcoming world cup. We have decent players, and a good coach should be able to plug them in their optimal positions on the pitch, and provide tactical direction to give them a competitive edge. So far, Waldrum has underwhelmed in this regard.
While I’m not averse to the idea of replacing him, my fear is that we should not go from the frying pan into the fire by engaging an incompetent replacement for the job, with the world cup looming in the horizon.
Even if we are able to secure a better coach, will the coach be provided with the funding and competent administrative support required?
Until the NFF (the current leadership or their replacement) start to play their part adequately, attempts to fix the coaching issue will be tantamount to window dressing. Even a Guardiola-Klopp combo would fail miserably without adequate administrative support.

      • Thanks Pompei. Waldrum does a lot of things that are just bothersome least of all his players selection and arrangements. But, yeah, any other coach would have to work with the NFF and we know the NFF will drain the enthusiasm out of even the best coaches in the world, as you alluded to.

        • Codex 2 years ago

Because of waldrum’s ineptitude we can’t beat a South Africa that has shipped 10 goals without reply against Brazil across 2 legs even you deo will do a far better job than this PE teacher we call a coach. The guy must go as for the current NFF we’re waiting for the upcoming elections.

    • Codex, NFF or no NFF, Randy Waldrum hasn’t improved the Super Falcons in any way, shape or form. Miscasting players in meaningless positions leading to a haphazard brand of football is his hallmark. For me, the Super Falcons were still the strongest team in that Cup Of Nations if they had been arranged and deployed appropriately.

But, like Pompei said, I don’t see any coach that can work with this unprofessional NFF.

      • Codex 2 years ago

It’s True no coach can work with this current administration of NFF henceforth the need to wait for a new election and hope for the best and ofcourse we’re saying the same thing about waldrum he’s not the man to take the falcons to the next level no,nada he can’t even maintain the current level I’ve been saying this from the wafcon that this man is unsuited to the job.if a decision is to be made about his future then it should be after the nff elections,Bro I’m tired of the decision making of pinnick and his board members.

      • pompei 2 years ago

As much as I agree that the team’s performance under Waldrum leaves a lot to be desired, I think that his exit will be worthwhile ONLY if we can secure a competent coach to replace him.
The OUR OWN fiasco is still fresh in our minds. NFF sacked a coach that was “winning ugly” while meeting all the minimum targets, a mistake that has cost our football a 7th world cup ticket and north of $20 million in appearance fees, not to mention endorsements, TV and other revenues!
If Waldrum’s replacement is going to be another catastrophe, then I would rather continue to maintain the status quo with Waldrum. For me to support Waldrum’s exit, I want to see a quality replacement.

        • I not only want to see a quality replacement, I also want an enabling environment for that Coach to thrive otherwise, just leave this Waldrum until after the world cup.
