Super Eagles striker Cyril Dessers was on target as Manchester United defeated Rangers 2-1 in Thursday’s Europa League game at Old Trafford.
Dessers, who came on as a second-half substitution, leveled parity for the visitors in the 88th minute after Rangers goalkeeper Butland had conceded an own goal.

His Nigerian teammate, Leon Balogun, was replaced in the second half after he copped an injury.
But Bruno Fernandes popped up with an even later ‘captain’s goal’ in the 92nd minute to win it.
It was a much-needed tonic for Ruben Amorim and his team off the back of Sunday’s painful Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, but actually a fourth straight win in Europe.

They say Desser’s inconsistency is an issue when we are talking about real strikers, but how consistent our other strikers are, if I may ask?

Some people even said Dessers can’t score against the big teams but what of the one he scored today against Man U?
We should put the hatred and sentiment aside; Dessers is second to Oshimen in the Super Eagles.
The debate should be clinical in front of the goal between Oshimen and Dessers.
Both of them are good, but Oshimen has made it to Afcon, and he’s our no 1 striker; this is why Dessers is the second to Oshimen; otherwise, I don’t see any of our strikers benching Kolawole.
With five goals in three matches, I believe Cyriel Kolawole Dessers deserve an accolade.

Dessers would have been our main striker now or in a fierce competition with Osimhen but transfers decisions failed him. He was the highest goal scorer in the Dutch League where he moved to Genk where he was the first choice until the coach changed the system to cross and nod which suited Onachu. That derailed him and cost him the national team spot. He would move to Feyenoord where he got his mojo and became the hottest Nigerian striker in 2021 but still he didn’t make the AFCON because the so-called coach said he did not have the time to board a bus to watch him. Another chance lost. Nevertheless, Dessers became the inaugural highest goal scorer at the UEFA Conference League where Feyenord came second. Unfortunately, the club cannot buy him, leading to lower clubs like Cremonese and then Rangers. If he had been fortunate to stay at Feyenord who have been performing well, he would have been in the NT. At 30, he stands little chance except he’s hugely successful at Rangers and even that would make him the 3rd choice. He’s far technical and clinical than Osimhen but providence is not on his side. I wish him well.
