Nigeria recorded a shock 93 – 98 win against China in their opening Group B game at the 2025 FIBA U-19 women’s basketball World Cup in Czech Republic on Saturday.
This is Nigeria’s second appearance at the junior women’s tournament after making her debut in 2011.
After losing the first quarter by 16-24, Nigeria went on to win the next three quarters.
They won the second quarter by 22-20, took the third 23-16 before wrapping the game up in the fourth with a score of 32-28.
In the group other game also played on Saturday Canada thrashed Portugal by 88-49.
Nigeria will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday) against Canada while China and Portugal will battle.
Aside Nigeria, the other African team that qualified for the U-19 women’s World Cup is Mali.

Mali are the reigning African champions after defeating Nigeria in the final of the qualifying tournament in September 2024 in South Africa.
Unfortunately Mali, who are suppose to face France, Brazil a s Australia in Group C, were unable to travel for the World Cup.
The U-19 women’s basketball World Cup, which started today (Saturday) will end on July 20.
