Giroud Breaks Record, Mbappe Bags Brace As France Overcome Poland To Book Quarter-final Spot

France zoomed into the quarter-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup after a 3-1 win against Poland in Sunday’s round of 16 tie.

A brace from Kylian Mbappe and a record-breaking goal by Olivier Giroud earned the reigning champions the win.

Barcelona striker Roberto Lewandowski got a consolation goal from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time for Poland.

Giroud now becomes France men’s national team all-time leading scorer, overtaking Thierry Henry on 52 goals.

For Mbappe he is the current top scorer in Qatar with five goals.

Giroud had the first attempt on goal in the 15th minute after Antoine Griezman played him through on goal but Wojciech Szczesny beat him to the ball.

In the 21st minute Poland went on a counter with Robert Lewandowski hitting a left foot strike which went just wide.

Just two minutes later Jules Kounde tested Szczesny from distance which the Juve keeper calmly saved.

With 10 minutes left Aston Villa’s Matty volleyed from the edge of your he box which went off target.

On 39 minutes Piotr Zielinski almost opened the scoring for Poland but Hugo Lloris saved his effort before Rafael Varane blocked a follow up.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 45th minute as Kylian Mbappe laid a delightful through pass to Giroud who then slotted beyond Szczesny.

Giroud thought he had doubled France’s lead on 58 minutes with a bicycle kick but there was an infringement before the ball ended inside the net.

In the 66th minute Kounde cross found Giroud whose slight touch nestled into the side-netting.

Mbappe made it 2-0 in the 74th minute as he received a pass from Ousmane Dembele before volleying into the roof of the net.

Theo Hernandez went close with nine minutes but his shot went just over the bar.

In the 91st minute Mbappe got the third goal for France as he controlled a pass inside the box before unleashing a superb volley into the far left corner.

But in the 99th minute Lewandowski pulled a goal back for Poland from the penalty spot following a handball by a French defender.

France will meet the winner between Englandanf Senegal in the quarter-finals.
