Ligue 1 was founded in 1932 as France’s professional top-flight league. Originally known as National, it later became Division 1 before being rebranded Ligue 1 in 2002, reflecting its modern commercial and competitive evolution.

AS Saint-Etienne remain the most successful club in Ligue 1 history with 10 league titles, a record achieved primarily during their golden era between the 1960s and early 1980s.

In the modern era, Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the league’s dominant force, winning multiple titles since 2013. Earlier eras were defined by Marseille’s European-level success, Monaco’s talent-development model, and Lyon’s early-2000s supremacy, all of which shaped Ligue 1’s competitive identity.

Salif Keita (Mali) was the first African superstar to dominate French football, winning three consecutive Ligue 1 titles with AS Saint-Etienne in 1967–68, 1968–69 and 1969–70. He was also Ligue 1 top scorer in 1967–68, cementing his legendary status.

Idrissa Gueye (Senegal) won Ligue 1 with Lille OSC in 2010–11, then added two more titles with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019–20 and 2021–22, making him one of the most successful African midfielders in the French topflight league's history.

Abdou Diallo (Senegal) won the Ligue 1 title with AS Monaco in 2016–17, before claiming further championships with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019–20 and 2021–22, highlighting his success at the top level in France.

Taye Taiwo (Nigeria) and Mamadou Niang (Senegal) were key figures as Olympique de Marseille won the Ligue 1 title in 2009–10. Niang also finished as Ligue 1 top scorer that season, underlining African influence in Marseille’s historic campaign.

George Weah (Liberia) won the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain in 1993–94 and later became the only African to win the Ballon d’Or (1995).
