McInally – Forget About Twickenham Record

Captain Stuart McInally says Scotland must forget about their dismal Twickenham record as they look to pull off a huge shock against England on Saturday.

The Scots have not beaten England at Twickenham in 36 years and are big outsiders to end that losing run on the final weekend of this year’s Six Nations.

Scotland have had a campaign to forget after losing to Ireland, Wales and France with their only victory coming against Italy, while injuries have hit the squad hard.

Winning the Calcutta Cup at Twickenham would be some way to bounce back but McInally is well aware how difficult a challenge his side face as he tries to be positive. “It is a one-off game. That’s the way we’re looking at it,” he said. “The history speaks for itself in terms of our success there in the past.

All that history goes out the window when it’s 80 minutes, a green pitch and two teams.” Scotland did beat England at Murrayfield in last year’s competition and McInally admits that is something to cling to when they attempt to claim another famous win. He added: “We know we’ve done it in the last 12 months.

It’s Scotland v England with the rivalry that has always been there. It is going to be an intense game and it will be about whoever plays the best rugby on the day. “We take confidence from knowing we can beat them, but we’re under no illusions about how hard it will be.” England can still win the tournament if they see off the Scots and Wales lose to Ireland, while a shock Scotland win could mean Ireland retain the trophy, if they win in Cardiff.
