Real Madrid have parted ways with Xabi Alonso as manager of the club after their 3-2 loss to Barcelona in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup.
Alonso leaves the Santiago Bernabéu after just seven months in charge, with the decision coming a day after the pulsating Clásico loss in Jeddah exposed ongoing concerns over Madrid’s form and direction.
The former Real Madrid midfielder endured a difficult start to his tenure, with issues from last season spilling into the current campaign.
Madrid hierarchy issued an official statement confirming Alonso’s exit, noting that the decision was mutually agreed.

“Real Madrid C. F. communicates that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as coach of the first team.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Real Madrid because he is a legend of Real Madrid and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Real Madrid thanks Xabi Alonso and all his technical team for their work and dedication throughout this time, and wishes them good luck in this new stage of their lives.”
Alonso won 24 of his 34 games in charge of Real but his side were booed off after a defeat by Celta Vigo last month, a loss which prompted an emergency meeting for the club’s hierarchy to discuss Alonso’s future.
