Zimbabwe has opted to host their 2026 World Cup qualifying match against South Africa in Rwanda, shifting the fixture from their previous home venue in South Africa.
Zimbabwe will now take on South Africa in Kigali on October 5.
Due to a FIFA ban preventing Zimbabwe from hosting international matches, the team has been using South Africa as their temporary base.
Zimbabwe is bottom of Group C with five points. Group leaders South Africa are currently on 13 points, followed by Rwanda and Benin Republic with eight points each.
Nigeria trails with seven, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe have six and five points respectively.
South Africa’s remaining matches include a trip to Lesotho on September 1, a home game against Nigeria on September 5, and their final two fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
Only the top team in each group qualifies automatically for the World Cup, while the best-performing second-placed teams will enter a play-off for a chance at an intercontinental play-off spot.

Well, this might be the only positive outcome for us from the heartbreaking 1 – 1 home draw against Zimbabwe.
That result sustains Zimbabwe’s hopes that they have a mathematical chance of qualifying. Like the rest of the group nations, they must have told themselves that all they need to do is win all their remaining matches and hope others falter somewhere.
Perhaps if Nigeria had won, the Zim Warriors would have given up hope of qualifying and wouldn’t have cared about playing their home match in SA against SA (ironically). And they wouldn’t have cared so much if they lost.
But now they care and would want the maximum points. The first step? Move their home match away to Rwanda.
With SA losing 3 points shortly and going back to 10 points, Zimbabwe knows they have a slim chance.
This group is still wide open.
Very well said.
On a norm the NFF shd have protest it if CAF have approved the match to be play at SA, that Zimbabwe has slim hope of qualifying or zero hope shdnt determine our FA to stand against the match to be play at SA.
@ kel,
You are very right, The Group Is Open Wide and Zimbabwe knows they have a slim chance.
