Troost-Ekong: I Want To Play In The Premier League With Watford

William Troost-Ekong is determined to help Watford make an instant return to the Premier League, reports Completesports.com.

The Hornets were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship at the end of last season, following a 19th-place finish just one point from safety.

Vladimir Ivic’s side have started life in the Championship on an impressive note, with two wins and a draw from their opening three games of the campaign.

Troost-Ekong moved to Watford from Serie A club Udinese on Monday and penned a five-year contract with the club.

The centre-back has a long standing ambition of playing in the Premier League and he is keen to see that happen soon.

“But I’m not there yet, the best is still to come and I want to try and win the Championship and then play in the Premier League with Watford,” he told the club website.

The 27-year-old is returning to familiar territory after visiting Vicarage Road with his father-in-law a couple of times in the past.

“I came with him a few times when I didn’t have to play myself,” he said.

. “The best game was probably when Ighalo was on fire against Liverpool. I heard about the interest a few weeks ago and was excited about it.

” I’ve been waiting for it to happen the last seven days and now I’m excited to be here. I met the lads, League there is a good vibe and it’s easy to settle in.”

  • The owners of Watford are determined to see the Hertfordshire outfit return to the English Premier League at the first attempt and bringing in the vastly experienced Super Eagles Ekong is central to that.

If the project works and they make it back to the summit of English football, then this sacrifice for Ekong would have been well worth it for him, Watford and Super Eagles fans.

“I believe in the project for Watford to get back into the Premier League,” the 27-year-old told BBC Sport Africa.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and Watford has given me the platform now to get there. Looking at the squad, I believe we have the quality to do it.”

Watford have already made a decent start to this campaign winning 2 and drawing 1 from their first three matches.

Although they need goals to score their way to promotion, they also need to keep things tight at the back. This is where Ekong’s leadership skills and defensive acumen come to play (quite literally).

Watford are yet to concede any goal this season; it will be fascinating to see Ekong help orchestrate things from the back at Vicrage road.

His partners in crime in the centre of Super Eagles defence – Ajayi and Balogun – left their mark in the Championship with defensive displayes that were as spectacular as they were rivetting.

Ekong is expected to do no less.
