The big hammer of the Nigeria National League (NNL) is hanging — like the proverbial Sword of Damocles — over Yobe Desert Stars following the unruly behaviour of their supporters at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, where the 2024/2025 NNL Super 8 Playoffs are currently taking place, Completesports.com reports.
Yobe Stars’ fans had arrived early at the stadium on Thursday morning before the match and initially settled in a section designated for the media, close to the VIP suite. Their rowdy behaviour and excessive noise drew the attention of stadium officials, who promptly relocated them to the proper stand designated for club supporters — just as the match kicked off.
Wikki Tourists went on to win the game 4–0, with all goals scored in the first half. As Yobe Stars trailed by three goals, the supporters became increasingly unruly and began destroying stadium seats, hurling them toward the pitch area.
NSCDC, Aluo Intervene As Yobe Desert Stars Fans’ Violence Escalates
It took the swift intervention of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel and NNL Chairman, Mr George Aluo, to prevent the situation from spiralling further. Security officials kept watch over the Yobe fans until the final whistle — but chaos resumed at full-time.
Die-hard supporters of Yobe Stars forced their way onto the pitch during post-match pleasantries and attempted to physically attack some of their own players. The situation was quickly contained, as security personnel and match officials intervened, forcing the attackers back into the stands.
Until this incident, all other matches in Asaba had been played without disruption. However, Yobe’s violent scenes now leave the club in danger of severe NNL disciplinary action — especially as they failed to secure promotion, while Wikki Tourists sealed their place in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
