Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo says Bayern Munich had the intention of signing him before making a late approach to sign Luis Diaz.
Since moving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Gakpo has become a key player for the Reds, but there were fears that Bayern could lure him away from Anfield as they looked to bolster their attacking areas.

Speaking to ESPN in his homeland while on international duty, Gakpo has now explained how Bayern made their interest known before they were forced to pivot to Luis Diaz, who moved in late July in a £65m deal.
“From what I understand, they (Bayern) did come (to open talks about a transfer), but they ended up buying Luis Diaz. It’s difficult because so much is happening.
“Other clubs are approaching you, but you might want to stay with your own club. Everyone handles that in their own way, but it’s definitely difficult. When the future is uncertain, it just becomes a very difficult story.”
