Maiden Edition Set for September 25 in Ile-Ife
The ancient city of Ile-Ife is gearing up to host the inaugural Ife Road Race on September 25, 2025, in a vibrant celebration of athletics, culture, and community development.
The 5-kilometre race, scheduled to coincide with the iconic Olojo Festival, is designed to discover and nurture raw athletic talent while promoting healthy living and preserving the rich Yoruba heritage.
Ife Road Race Inspired by Youth Empowerment Vision
Conceived by Sooko Adeleke Odewade, a devoted youth empowerment advocate, the race aims to use sport as a powerful tool for transformation.

“Our society lacks opportunities for discovering and grooming talent,” Odewade noted. “This race is a platform to identify raw potential, but it won’t stop there. We’re building a system of coaching, mentorship, and support long after the race ends.”
Backed by Ooni of Ife, Organised for All Levels of Runners
The event enjoys the endorsement of His Imperial Majesty, Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and is being organised in partnership with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative.
Open to youth, amateurs, and professional runners, the race offers participants certificates of participation and special cash prizes for winners across multiple categories.
The carefully mapped-out route will pass through Ile-Ife’s iconic cultural sites, offering runners and spectators a scenic and historical view of the city’s heritage.
Mentorship, Scholarships, and Post-Race Support in Focus
In addition to athletic competition, organisers are developing long-term programmes in partnership with universities, state sports councils, and Nigerian veteran athletes abroad to offer post-race training, mentorship, and scholarship opportunities.
“We want to help these young ones become world-class athletes. If we can create role models from this effort, the ripple effect will inspire many others,” Odewade added.
Call for Sponsors, Partners, and Volunteers
The Ife Road Race also aims to boost local commerce by attracting visitors, vendors, and sponsors during the Olojo Festival.
Organisers are calling on corporate bodies, government agencies, philanthropists, and brands to come onboard through sponsorships and partnerships.

“This is more than a race,” said a spokesperson from the Alade’fa Initiative. “It’s a movement. An investment in youth, in health, and in the cultural soul of our community.”
