Ex-Arsenal Star Commends George Aluo-Led NNL Leadership
Nigeria football legend and former Super Eagles striker, Nwankwo Kanu, has expressed high praise for the organisation of the just-concluded 2024/2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 promotion play-offs, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, Completesports.com reports.
Kanu, who is the Executive Committee Chairman of Enyimba FC and a two-time African Footballer of the Year, shared his views on the sidelines of the tournament, applauding the NNL leadership under veteran journalist George Aluo. Papilo was in Asaba with Victor Ikpeba to support the 2024/2025 NNL Super 8 Promotion Playoffs while it lasted.
“What I’ve seen here is wonderful. The atmosphere is fantastic, and it gives clubs the opportunity to scout and sign players to strengthen their teams,” said Kanu, fondly known as Papilo during his illustrious playing days.

“On this note, I thank the NNL Chairman and his crew. What they are doing is massively good. All Nigerians have to come out and support. You can’t just sit at home and criticise. My presence here means I support the league, and I’ll keep on doing so.”
Kanu Appeals for Government and Corporate Support
The former Ajax and Arsenal forward, who also won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax Amsterdam, called on government at all levels, individuals, and corporate organisations to support the NNL’s vision of uplifting Nigerian football from the grassroots.
“But we need all the companies. We need government people. We need individuals. NNL cannot do it on their own,” Kanu stated.

“We say we’re the giant of Africa. If the giant of Africa wakes up, the NNL will be super, super. Look at other countries—sometimes, their Championship league is even stronger than their Premier League. Why can’t we do the same here?”

Kanu, also a FIFA and UNICEF Ambassador, described the NNL as the most competitive league in the country.
“If you ask me, I’ll say so. We’re here now and you said only five goals were scored in the first six games. That shows how tough it is,” he noted.

“Nobody’s going to help anybody here. If you want to win, you must work very hard. Teams must give their best and let the best side emerge victorious.”
He emphasised the importance of continuity and media collaboration to sustain the NNL’s progress.
“Every year must be better. This is 2025. Each coming year should be an improvement. And like I always say, the media must be part of this journey. Let us tell the story as it truly is.
“Every Nigerian who loves football must come out and witness the development taking place here.”
