Liverpool have announced the sacking of head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge.
Former Bournemouth Coach Iraola Tipped As Slot’s Replacement
Slot, 47, guided the Liverpool to their 20th league title in his debut season but they have struggled during his second year, finishing fifth in the Premier League.
Andoni Iraola, who recently left Bournemouth, is the leading contender to replace Slot.
The Spaniard guided Bournemouth to European qualification for the first time in their history, as the Cherries will feature in the Europa League next season.
Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group said in a statement:”That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.
“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.

“From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it.”
Slot’s Coaching Career
Slot started his managerial career in the academy of PEC Zwolle and as an assistant at Cambuur before taking over as co-head coach at the latter.
In 2017, he became an assistant at AZ, where he was appointed head coach in 2019. Slot became head coach of Feyenoord in 2021.
He led the club to the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League final in his first season and won the club the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup in subsequent seasons.
He joined Liverpool in 2024, leading the side to a Premier League title in his first season at the club and becoming the first Dutch manager to win the competition, before his dismissal at the end of the following season.

Slot benefited greatly from Klopp 2.0 in his first season. The players. The “metal football” even though he tweaked it a little.
But when age caught up with most of the tools (Van Dijk is 34, Salah 33), suddenly fortunes began to dip. Mentality dropped.
Yes, Jota loss affected them but his death occurred in pre-season too.
What’s my point.
Back to home.
Back to falcons.
Madugu used Waldrum 2.0 team that wowed the world in 2023 and lost gallantly at 2024 olympics to 3 menacing giants in women’s football: Japan, Spain and Brazil.
Falcons tortured me when they played against lowly Botswana and Algeria in the group stage of the last WAFCON.
While I didn’t expect the capitulation of Zambia in the quarter finals, Alozie’s fortuitous goal against South Africa in the semis saved us from penalties that would have gone either way.
The final was another miracle. Less said about how the referee stood in our favour against the home country after a penalty shout against us that will easily be given today if they played in the Spanish league and maybe debatable if it occurred in EPL, the better.
What’s my point?
The torture in the Benin republic qualifiers late last year for this WAFCON began to unravel the team since the waldrum hangover dried up.
We huffed and puffed to a draw at home before winning 2 nil in Togo.
That was October.
No games again till March against Cameroon twice. We lost the “first leg” before winning the second friendly.
Basically, 4 matches only since WAFCON final last July.
So, it is safe to say the upcoming WAFCON is in the image of Madugu and Gusau.
I already laugh at the humiliation ahead.
Thank you NFF for crippling the only national team that has won the most laurels for Nigeria football because you are just in a rush to decapitate every national team.
Thank you Madugu for not even having a program too for falcons.
You both are match made in hell.
Chelle is busy with friendlies that really do not mean much to a nation still sulking for missing the world cup but he’s carrying on nonetheless.
Not falcons who have never missed the world cup since 1991.
I’m so happy that the continent isn’t waiting to watch falcons next move before they improve.
I hope prayerfully, the girls should be able to reach quarter finals so that they can at least qualify for playoffs in December since they are the number 1 team on the continent.
Playoff isn’t a given but it is better than not leaving the group stage which at the moment may be our reality.
Only 2 teams qualify for the quarter finals and only prepared teams will get results.
Right now, up Gusau. Up Madugu.
Spineless coach. Spineless glass house.
Long overdue. He turned Liverpool from Lions to pussy cats. He didn’t win the league in 2025; Klopp’s leftover aura did.
With Klopp, Arsenal would have waited a bit longer.
