Some former players of the Super Falcons who laid the foundation for the 10th edition of the Women’s African Nations Cup in Morocco are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to extend his magnanimity to those who won the trophy for the first time for Nigeria.
Speaking with Gongnews from her base in the US Ajayi, revealed that they were only playing and winning the trophy for the nation and were never rewarded for their feat.
Ajayi said they are appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider their efforts because of their own exploits.
“We were playing and winning laurels for the Super Falcons and the nation but we were just given empty promises during our time and nothing was given to us playing for Nigeria then.”
The Ondo state born player, is one of the most decorated athletes in the state.
She was captain of the Super Falcons at WAFCONs, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Olympic Games.
She successfully led the
team to achieve five WAFCON wins, secure qualifications for two World Cups, and participated in multiple Olympic Games.
“We are just making a passionate appeal to the President of the nation and we know he can do it because he is the father of the nation and he has set a great example for how sports people should be rewarded and we believe that we can be honoured and we just want our children to know that we truly served the nation.”
Speaking further, Ajayi revealed that most of her teammates are no longer working and don’t have any source of income and depend solely on their teammates who are in diaspora.
“We are not happy because they have nothing to show that they once represented the nation, if the current Super Falcons can be honoured and rewarded we are just calling on the President to extend his love to those who started the journey from the beginning.” she concluded.
