Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa has disclosed that the Democratic Republic of Congo made the right decision to drop him from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.
Despite missing a significant portion of this season due to injury, his country did not select Wissa to participate in the tournament in Morocco.
The 29-year-old joined Newcastle in a £55million summer transfer from Brentford on transfer deadline day in September but picked up a knee injury, ironically while on international duty with DR Congo.

However, speaking with Foot RDC, Wissa stated that he is ‘not in the best shape’ to represent DR Congo in this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.
“I’m not in the best shape to represent my country right now. It’s a very difficult decision to make,” Wissa told Foot RDC.
“The DRC holds a special place in my heart. I can only wish my team-mates the best of luck in this AFCON. The most important thing now is to get back in shape so I can help the team during the play-offs in March.”
