Benin forward Andreas Hountondji says the game against Rwanda will go a long way in determining the team’s quest of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
With only two rounds of matches left to play, the race for the top spot remains wide open. Benin currently leads the table with 14 points, edging South Africa on goal difference, while Nigeria and Rwanda are tied on 11 points each.
In a chat with FIFA.com, Hountondji stated that Benin must do everything to pick up the maximum three points against Rwanda.

“I honestly can’t wait. To be honest, I don’t know if it’s fully dawned on me yet how close we are to actually qualifying. Playing for the national team is a really special adventure and one that’s so rewarding on a human level. This is our country, so it means so much to us.
“Our next match, against Rwanda, is going to be pivotal. If we manage to pick up the three points, we’ll be very handily placed ahead of our final game, against Nigeria. Honestly, I have so much love for this group of boys that just finding ourselves in this position now, as the qualifiers are coming to an end, is amazing.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing just how pumped and hungry we’ll be. We’ve got the chance to create great excitement and some incredible memories. I think we’re capable of getting the job done – anything is possible,” the former Standard Liege man said.

Did anyone hear or read from anywhere of Gernot Rohr been owed salaries in a small nation called Benin republic? Yet Nigeria with it’s massive economy will be behaving irresponsibly. Remove corruption from the system and Nigeria will be great again!
You want people who entered positions by corruption to remove corruption? I laugh in pidgin.
Until NFF statutes is torn apart and the clueless chairmen of npfl clubs don’t have a say in who heads NFF happens, we might as well keep trying to hug the wind
