2026 WCQ: Super Eagles Suffer Huge Setback After 2-1 Loss To Benin Republic

    James AgberebiBy James AgberebiJune 10, 2024Updated:June 10, 202472 Comments3 Mins Read

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered more setback in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after going down 2-1 to Benin Republic on matchday 4 in Abidjan on Monday.

Despite taking the lead through Raphael Onyedika, the Beninoise fought back to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

The Eagles have now failed to win any of their four games, recording three draws and one defeat.

The defeat leave the team in fifth place on three points while Benin go top in Group C on seven points.

After the draw against South Africa, head coach Finidi George made some changes with Onyedika, Terem Moffi and Samuel Chukwueze all starting.

The Eagles started the game on the front foot when in the 12th minute Onyedika sent a pass to Bright Osayi-Samuel whose shot went off target.

Two minutes later Ademola Lookman had a chance to open the scoring but was intercepted.

In the 26th minute Benin Republic almost profited from a corner but the offside flag went up.

The Beninoise went close to breaking the deadlock but the Eagles had Stanley Nwabali to thank as he pulled off a big save.

The Eagles eventually took the lead on 28 minutes through Onyedika who received a pass from Samuel Chukwueze on the edge of the box and volleyed into the top corner.

Benin Republic equalized on 37 minutes through Jodel Doussou following a defensive error in the Eagles backline.

In three minutes of first half added time Benin Republic went 2-1 ahead as he slotted home from a corner unmarked.

Five minutes into the second half the Eagles made two changes with Victor Boniface and Paul Onuachu replacing Alex Iwobi and Terem Moffi.

On 55 minutes Lookman wasted a golden opportunity as he headed a cross from Chukwueze off target with the keeper to beat.

In the 62nd minute Benin Republic went close again from a throw in but Nwabali held the ball calmly.

On 65 minutes Calvin Bassey went in a dangerous cross but the ball was cleared away.

With 20 minutes left Benin went on the counter but Nwabali rushed off his area to prevent the danger.

Few minutes later Paul Onuachu and Victor Boniface went for a floated long pass but the Beninoise cleared their lines.

The Eagles kept pouring forward for the equalizer but Benin defence remained resolute.

Meanwhile, the Eagles will be back in action in the qualifying campaign when they will travel away on matchday five to face Rwanda in March 2025.

Then on matchday six they will entertain Zimbabwe also in March 2025.

What are the names of the players that were in the national team that missed world cup back to back?

      A.
      B.
      C.
      D.

That’s the disgrace and blot many will have on their football CVs FOREVER. When 9 nations and not 5 are taking the center stage of the continent?

Which sane coach will take over this gloomy team?

A big Congratulations to the NFF president (Ibrahim Musa Gusau) and NFF Crew, Minister of sport (Senator John Owan-Enoh), Chief Segun Odegbami, Amaju Pinnick and those calling for local coaches for finally failing with their Own.

Rohr is topping the group with Benin? What a wow. Nothing suggest that they won’t still beat Nigeria in Uyo-badluck, especially with bear-bear Finidi

This Gamble with Finidi have failed. Its obvious he is not yet at that level. Our players were just running round the pitch clueless . Amunike will have done a better job . Qualifying a small country like tanzania for the nations cup first time and winning the world cup is not beans. There must something Amunike knows that Finidi is yet to know as a local champion. I dont see Eagles wining any games under Finidi

Finidi has finished me! Right now, I’m reminded of what Napoleon said about generals, “I’d rather have lucky generals”. Finidi is not lucky and he’s not smart! We have watched over 4 matches a coach gamble with his selection and set the worst records; First loss to Mali; First competitive loss to Benin. He is first to achieve all the worst records.
My mum used to say something when I was a kid, “He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool”. Finidi, you know not and what is worse is that you lack the awareness to know that you know nothing, so the only conclusion is that you and those that appointed you are fools.
A honest coach would resign, but I don’t expect you to and seeing we need a miracle and the help of others I believe we should lay this local coach matter by appointing Amunike next! That way when two local coaches have failed our eyes would clear!

Yes I agree. They should appoint Amuneke and Amokachi to round it up. I am sure they will deliver a hat trick of AFCON and WC to Nigeria. INDIGENOUS coach my foot. Serves Nigeria right, another golden generation will miss out lol

Gernot Rohr is a great coach. Much respect to him and congrats to small Benin Republic. I wish Benin Republic the best and qualification to the next world cup.

Finidi should honorably resign or be fired immediately. The entire NFF board should resign if they have any iota of shame left in them. What a disgrace. Africa will have 9 or 10 teams at the next FIFA world cup and the so-called giant of Africa will not be one of them! What a shameful and disgraceful achievement.

It is not even worth reviewing this match as it was just shambles.

It started well enough with a glorious goal by Onyedika but shoddy individual and team defending proved fatal.

After the second half, Finidi then revealed how unprepared he is by pressing the panic button to throw in 5 players to try to bully Benin into giving up their prized 2 goals to 1 lead.

What followed was one of the most abject brand of football ever played by any Super Eagles outfit in the history of Nigerian football. Players drifting up and down the pitch like headless chickens instructed by a coach who had clearly lost his head and entirely bereft of ideas.

As a fervent Finidi well-wisher, I sympathise with him. He did his best but on the night, Rohr showed why he and Peseiro used negative, boring football to achieve positive results for Nigeria.

I have been called out by many fans for wishing Finidi well with this assignment. But many of these are the same people who criticised Peseiro and Rohr for being pragmatic when using defensive approach to meet targets for Nigeria.

I am waiting, yes I am eagerly waiting for that coach who will come and play beautiful football with the Super Eagles and use it to take us to uncharted territory.

Should Finidi be retained or sacked? I couldn’t give a shit! The NFF are ruining Nigeria’s football. Even if they sack Finidi, they will only replace him with Imama Amakapabo!

I will continue to support the Super Eagles regardless.

We are reaping what we sowed. A Ghanaian player confessed that he was 50 years old while his first son was 47 years.

How do you expect a 40 year old man claiming 27 football age to run consistently for90 minutes? That explains why those coaches used defensive tactics and it worked.

Ndidi is finished and has no role in that team. AFCON 2023 showed he was never missed.

I never criticized pesero. I understand that a coach is smart if he uses the players at his disposal well. Westerhof did this at afcon 1990. Keshi changed style and player position after first match at afcon 2013.

The reason I am ever a supporter of Mourinho.

You see who are we impressing by playing beautiful brand of football when we don’t have the personal.

Cameroon have won afcon against us without beautiful brand of football.

Germany have won world cups and tournaments without playing the best of football.

Spain began to use a false 9 and rely heavily on their midfield because they understood the players at their disposal.

Foolish coaches like Finidi will not do the needful.

        Beautiful football my foot.

During qualifiers for world cup in 1994 we were not playing beautiful football. We concentrated on our strength and win games.

When you don’t have midfielders that are geniuses you don’t expect to play sexy football. Play to your strength.

Pesero would have won the afcon if not for the fact that we played the host and the players were tired.

Findi should resign latest tomorrow morning or he should be sacked.

Benin is not that good. They scored from school errors at the back.

I beg to disagree deo. From the last match the same fans questioned why he substituted so late. What did the players that were substituted offering in the first half and even when they came in. Except you don’t want to be the truthful, the lackluster display of some of the players was nothing to write home about. Really don’t understand why the coach is being faulted here. He was faulted for not starting certain players, they all came in and played crap. Was the goals conceded the fault of the coach? you clearly called it has it is school errors by professionals. If he gets sacked or resigns I believe he was sabotaged by this players. Simple

        Kenneth,
Why will the players seek to sabotage Finidi? They want to go to the world cup to improve their stocks.

The team looked disjointed and lacked organisation, something I noticed against South Africa.

Finidi selected players will limited leadership qualities. He lost his nerves in the second half.

His inexperience at this level was on full display.

If the players are to be blamed, the coach who selected them should bear some of the blame.

George Finidi has done his bit It is obvious to all that he doesn’t have what it takes to handle the SUper Eagles. Some players came late to camp te they still started the first game against South Africa. We need another coach that will instill discipline in this team.
These players are not motivated to go to the world Cup and it is rather sad they do not understand the importance of playing at the World Cup. Let’s disband this team and start afresh with a new coach before the next qualifier. Thank you Finidi, it wasn’t great while it lasted.

It is your yeye that stinks. You asked about wingers that can cross ball, was the coach meant to enter the field of play to show them how to cross the ball. The almighty Lookman couldn’t cross, even chukwueze, so that’s finidi’s fault. Players that you are meant to hold accountable for sloppy display you didn’t. It is the coach. Super Eagles failure is a product of by catching or bad players but a reflection of bad leadership from the president to the law makers through to the citizens.
Nigerians are not patriotic. No commitment for excellent. They are hypocrite in all sphere of lives.
Success is spiritual, I meant genuine success. A country where people are raining curses on the land can not breakthrough. Today, Nigerians are the best in human resources, they the best in many aspects of life. Otherwise, they are the most disorganized people as a result of lack of social justice.
It will continue because it is the turn of Tunibu.
We know how we get here. We know how to get out of it.
For the team to qualify for the world cup. I believe the team has to be disband, look for total new players. Forget about Kelechi, Ndidi, bright, Ajayi, Iwobi, Onuachu, Osihmen, Awaziem, and any players with no rivalry spirit.
The boys have been playing games as if nothing at stake. Lose to Benin, draw with South Africa, and the rest minnows. A shame that will forever hurt these set of players.
I just waisted my data for the worse team on earth.

When I said right from the day these draws were out, and continued to re-iterate it, that GERNOT ROHR will have a huge say in whether Nigeria qualifies for the world cup or not, some bastard children raised in refuse dumps chose Dr.Drey as the one they should hurl all the insults they’ve learnt in all their miserable lives.

The man has been slowly and steadily revamping this Beninoise team, reforming them from a team that would go nearly 4 games without scoring to a team that can at least score in almost every game. Gradually re-shaping the team from a serial loser to a team that will only lose 3 out of 10.

It took an incredible 90th minute save from Mozambique’s GK in Maputo to stop Rohr’s Benin from qualifying for the last AFCON after being rock bottom of their group for the entire 1st half of the qualification series.

The signs have been there, that something new is happening in Porto Novo

But these arrogant generation of hatefilled and ungrateful children went yap yap yap yap doing all within their means to undermine all what Rohr did with this team after he met it not being able to qualify for ordinary AFCONs.

They said he was only qualifying because he had the best players……Ngwa….2 WCQs later, the best players cannot qualify anymore.

A team that almost own AFCON is now bottom of a WCQ group that contains Lesotho, Rwanda, Benin……what a shame.

If you all cannot see with your inner eyes because that’s how blind you lot are……THIS IS KARMA AT WORK…..!!!

Next time, y’all will stop being backstabbing bastards and learn to be grateful to your coaches whatever they manage to eke out with the national team in this jungle called Nigeria.

Having seen the sparkling performance of Nigerian Cafu Sadiq ismail and tantalising tanimu , we have to increase the quota. NFF you played a masterstroke with Finidi’s appointment.

Did he qualify for AFCON….? Yes or No..?

            Stop making up bs excuses.

In 2011 when he was appointed we had only played 1 qualifier in the AFCON qualification series….we still had 5 more matches left. We only needed a win at home vs Guinea in our last match of the series to qualify…..we were already leading 2-1 in Abuja but he wanted to play to the gallery to score more goals so he emptied our midfield like finidi did today and started bringing in more strikers….jus one counter attack from guinea and we were bundled out of AFCON….that whole couldn’t manage a game we already had in our hands properly.

Don’t come here telling us crap in defence of a 2 time SE failure.

If he didn’t start from scratch with sE did he also not start from scratch with the 3 clubs he relegated in the NPFL.

Give him our U teams, yes that’s his specialty. But he should never ever come close to our SE till h and his colleagues take one NPFL club to continental qualification and at least the final of either the CAF CL or CAF CC.

The serious ones can start from the U17, U20 and U23 but not the super Eagles.

I’ve watched his teams both live and on tv and one thing stands out….The lack of compression of space and organisation off the ball. football nowadays is a game heavily influenced by what a team can do without possession of the ball, how effective they are without the ball etc.

Well, what has happened has happened. We can’t turn back the hands of time.
But we can definitely do better going forward!
First things first. The current moronic NFF president, his board of idiots, the useless technical director and the entire technical department need to UNFAILINGLY tender their resignation. Carry FIFA along in this process.
Second, Finidi should have his sack letter hand delivered. Not email or text. The letter should be issued from the office of the sports ministry.
Third, we need a brand new NFF president with a brand new board. Brand new technical director and technical department. Again, FIFA should be involved in this.
Qualification for NFF office – ABILITY TO MONETIZE AND MANAGE FOOTBALL.
If you can’t generate revenue from football or manage it competently, STAY AWAY.
Government can help by IMMEDIATELY CUTTING ANY AND ALL FUNDING TO THE NFF. When the thieves see that there is no money to steal, they will voluntarily leave the place, and genuine administrators will have a chance to come in and do a proper job.
Next, we must hire a world class coach. This will be expensive, but by doing this, we are investing in success, and also investing in the future of our football.
Next, work with only the best of the best players. SE is not a rehab center!!!
SE is not anybody’s father’s compound!!!
Challenge players to be at their best, because if you are not the best, your spot will be taken by a better player. No sentiment, no nepotism, no godfatherism. MERIT, MERIT, MERIT ONLY!!!
If we implement this IMMEDIATELY, we still have a chance to qualify for the 2026 mundial. A competent coach and our very best players can still win the rest of the matches we have and qualify us. BUT WE MUST ACT NOW.
OUT WITH THE OLD AND USELESS! IN WITH THE NEW!

Everyone here is a professional in one field or the other. What has been your greatest asset on the job? What gives you the smart, the edge, the push out of difficult or nearly impossible situations?

Your professional training or the experience you garnered over the years, even if you fumbled in the initial tasks?

It’s the reason Oliseh failed. It’s the reason Finidi is failing. It’s the reason no one has entrusted Mourinho, Guardiola etc with a national team job. Like for like. Club football or experience is not same as national team coaching.

It’s the reason Keshi succeeded, after wobbling and fumbling with mail, then steadying with Togo, before winning Afcon with Nigeria. It’s the reason Siasia had minimal success (even if the experience was at the age-grade level, it was still translatable). It’s the reason I preferred Amunike to Finidi. The former has been head coach, even if the results hadn’t been fantastic. It;s his terrain. He’s a fish in water.

Gernot Rohr – Burkina Faso, Gabon, Nigeria. Loads of African national team coaching experience. Dide schooled Olishe.

Broos. Champion with Cameroun in 2017 and now building with South Africa. He school NFF rooke Finidi.

Finid. Crickets. Emyimba? CAF cahmipns league? Nothing. Gusau and his cohorts of jokers and comment wanted to gamble with a rookie coach so they could save money. I watched the so-called training camp. Never saw a single tactical session with session, except occasional hurdles with the players. It was only the physical traner guy, Chima that was doing some fitness sessions with them.

Theyw ere all over the place like headless chickens today. It’s easy to spot a talented but coachless team.

      Don’t disband the team.

Sack the coach and bring in another coach ( a wise one not this present arrogant one)

      This will boost players morale.

Look at areas where team is deficient and look for players that can fill in.. To me without ekong we are very poor at central defence. It’s only a foolish coach will rely in unfit semi, careless awaziem, unknown Tanimu and mistake prone bassey at central defence. It’s like he does not even watch our matches before. What a coach.

I hope Oshimen will try to be available for matches now. Four matches and you are not there and you want to play at the world cup.

You played the last for your club and you’re injured again in an inconsequential match. Why can’t you keep yourself for the qualifiers. People like Ronaldo will do that for Portugal.

Yes, he drew the first 2 qualifying matches and that was before AFCON. So what do you say about losing to a team like BENIN even in a neutral venue ? You cant be doing things the same way all the time, and be expecting different results. If you are going to let a coach go because you are not too satisfied with what they are giving then you have to replace them with a better coach. However, if you are trying to console yourself by thinking or assuming that FINIDI will give you something better than PESEIRO with this team, then you must have been on a cheap drug.

Every thing aout Nigeria is in shambles. The only thing that gave people joy and united the country is also in shambles. Small countries like Benin Republic, Togo and Gambia can afford foreign coaches but the so-called giant of Africa went for an inexperienced local coach of Enyimba. You can only reap what you sow. From AFCON finalists to 5th position in a weak African world cup qualifying group! Finidi should be fired if he does not resign. The entire board of the NFF should resign if they have any modicum of shame in them. Gernot Rohr has finally got his pound of flesh back after his unjust sack. We do not want to see any player from the Eagles 94 set asking to be a coach of the Nigerian senior team again as they have shown that they are grossly bereft of ideas, and incapable of coaching a senior national team. What a country called Nigeria, and what a shame. Thanks

The useless technical director (Austin Eguavoen) and the entire staff of the technical department of the NFF should honorably resign their positions if they have any modicum of shame in them. This is also the fault of people like Pinnick and Gusau who removed Gernot Rohr and foisted an untested local coach on Nigeria. Missing two consecutive world cups in a row is shameful for Nigeria and these generation of players of the Super Chickens.

      Super ke?
There is nothing super about these chickens.
As long as this useless NFF ONIGBESE board remain in office with the Oshodi Okrika coach they forced on us, the name of the national team should be changed.
FUFU CHICKENS, AKPU CHICKENS, EBA CHICKENS. Maybe even AMALA CHICKENS.
These are the names that fit them better.
When we get rid of this NFF and their disaster of a coach, hire a coach that knows his onions, and get only the best of the best players into the team, then their name can revert back to SUPER EAGLES.
See them and their cassava legs. Overweight and unfit. No skill. OTONDO United.
We don’t expect a team to win all the time. That’s not realistic. But we expect to see effort. If you lose, LOSE GALLANTLY.
When Peseiro lost the Afcon final, people were still happy with him. Rohr lost several matches while with Nigeria. But even in those losses, you could see effort and endeavor.
Not this tepid, listless, lifeless performances that are being forced down our throats!
Abegi, if any player is not ready to give us their best, let them retire from international football!
Let only serious players remain. We can build from there.
Out with the clueless Okrika Oshodi coach. Out with corrupt, useless, incompetent officials!

Benin defeated Nigeria because NFF decided to give us a coach who was never qualified to lead the team. You want to blame Siasia for coming to do a rescue mission even if that rescue mission was after the first match of a qualifier? You think it is appropriate to throw a worker into the middle of an ongoing project and then blame him or her for failing with the project. Is that not a misnomer? What happens to the principle of appointing the right person at the right time and at the very first time. Who told NFF never to do things right the very first time.
Aside from Keshi, the only other two coaches we have are actually Siasia and Amuneke in that other. You may not like them but that does not take anything away from their achievements as coaches. But you and I know that NFF will not give them the job of super eagles on a clean slate because they are supposedly “stubborn coaches” and won’t dance to anybody’s tune. What do you expect when NFF employed a yes man to be coach of super eagles? Give what he does not have?
Now that you’re saying all these, especially about Rohr and Benin, I hope you will also come and be forceful about Rohr and Benin after the entire matches of this world cup qualifiers are played. I hope you know that this is a series and not a one or two match qualifier.

God bless you Josh. Well said. I don’t blame those pretenders at all. Amunike is more qualified to manage Super Eagles than Finidi but NFF as usual, they don’t like better thing.

It is unfortunate that Siasia can not coach any team now but we still have Amunike but they tagged him a stubborn man.

I’m so sure of this if Amunike was in charge of Eagles against Benin, the result wouldn’t have ending up this way.

Corruption have eaten deep and NFF do not care but we do and NFF must go.

I am expecting government to do something about the NFF this month. Fingers crossed
        Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Are this not the same players Amuneke will invite to come. Until you guys open your eyes and understand that some of this boys don’t care, most especially the European rejects. They will go back to their video games immediately after the match.

          Useless drunkard.

I hope your are satisfied now. I hope you are happy with the evil you and your fellow street dogs have done to Nigerian football…?!

Shebi qualification for tournaments means nothing…..winning afcon bronze and silver means nothing.

The same players that you claimed were the reasons behind Rohr’s 60% ratio…..the same players than were so good they can win AFCON with any caoch in 2 weeks have suddenly become lifeless under your Useless local coaches.

The last 6 WCQ results before you and your fellow idiots ganged up against Rohr was 4 wins 1 draw and 1 loss. The 6 WCQ results we have played after Rohr are 5 draws and 1 loss……did NFF still do the right thing by listening to fools like you…..? LMAOOO

          Awon Oluya gbogbo.

        Stop making up silly excuses.

Siasia only needed to win against Guinea on home soil to qualify irrespective of whether he coached the first game or not.

Just win Guinea and we qualify for 2012 afcon. Actually we were already leading 2-1 in the 2nd half until he bungled the game with his tactical blunders.

We also lost our 1st match in the 2019 afcon qualifiers yet the much hated ordinary PE coach still qualified us with a game to spare by getting us the draw we needed away in Johannesburg.

We were 3rd in our WCQ group in 2002 WCQ when Amodu took over with 3 games to go and won 3 straight matches to qualify us for the world cup.

So stop giving us silly excuses as if it is impossible to take over a team and still succeed. Siasia failed to qualify for Afcon twice….Period!

He and the rest of his overrated teammates should take over teams in the NPFL and lead them to the CAF CL final before dreaming of coming near our national team.

Enough of these incompetent local rats who cannot get jobs anywhere else except the NFF pities them.
