Ukraine 2-2 Nigeria my thoughts on the game.

Uzoho has reclaimed the number 1 Jersey, we don’t know who will back him up.
Defence started good then fell away.
Midfield was solid, Aribo might end up taking Etebo’s place when Ndidi comes back. But with Esiti, Aribo, Iwobi, Ndidi and Etebo we have 5 good midfielders. Aribo is also a counter foil to Iwobi, he answers two questions.
Attack was good, a little bit of selfish play from both Chukwueze and Kalu, but all 4 were dangerous.

Super Eagles still have a problem with game management and I felt a sense of dejavu at the end with Ukraine pressing and echoes of Algeria at AFCON and Argentina at the last world cup were ringing in my head.

The second Ukraine goal should not have stood with the current rules starting that contact with the arm intentional or accidental rules the goal out. Ref got it correct then was swayed by the linesman (Uzoho palmed the ball into the attackers arm).

With Ndidi, Onyekuru, Omeruo and Ebuehi to come back, we are good to go for the world cup 2022 matches coming up in October. We should break the top 30 in the FIFA rankings by December and that means the threshold for Nigerian players in England will fall from 75% of games in two years to 60% of games (Northern Ireland and Slovenia just above us are not doing fantastically well)

          Thanks Big D.
Game management…! That’s what our players need to learn. I for one believe its something that is learnt through collective experience. But if there’s a coach who can teach that at national team level, then i think we need such caoch ASAP.

By the next fifa rankings, we should be able to topple Tunisia to 2nd spot in Africa since tunisia lost to an african opposition which is way below them in the rankings, while we drew (and almost won) against an European opposition which is nearly 10 places above us in the same rankings.

          We r gradually getting there….!

He was swayed by a linesman who was on the wrong side of the situation. You noticed the demeanor of the Ukrainian player in question showed his guilt.
Anyway more,in my post below. Regards @ BigD and Dr Drey

This team can easily pass for our u23 team, yet they are already taking a team almost 10 solid places higher than us on the FIFA rankings log to the cleaners.
      .
And later some people will say Rohr plays defensive, boring and patternless football. LMAO

Really open game! This does not look like a Rohr-tutored side. They are playing expensive, progressive and positive brand of football. More of that please.

I am not seeing the sit-back-soak-attack-and-counter style of play that I have come to expect.

This Super Eagles outfit is taking the battle to the opposition.

If this is the new era Rohr Eagles, more of it please.

Chai, we sure missed SAMUEL KALU at the Afcon. What a player! And how about Joe Ayodele Ari-BALL? Playing as if it is his 100th match, not his first? So cool, calm and collected on the ball? Aina dribbling them up and down like small pikin? Our boys are on fire today. And there is more fire power on the bench! Well done boys!

      Half time in Dnipro.
Nigeria has CLEARLY been the better team so far.
We seem to be beginning to reap the benefits of having the core of the same guys playing together for a long time.

We are being opened up in the wings though. And that is because Kalu and Chukwueze arent providing enough cover for the full backs, several 2 on 1 situations which has seen the Ukraine get behind our defense through the wings.

Iwobi seems to be growing into the no 10 role gradually. He’s been the architect of almost every positive forward move we have made so far.

Chukwueze has had a rather subdued 1st half so far had a chance through on goal earlier on his favoured left foot but chose to target the near post while the far post was wide open. Arjen Robben, Mo Salah or Messi would be licking their lips if such opportunity were offered them on the same platter. Samu is still young tho. hopefully he will get better with his decision making in coming years.

Aribo hasn’t been bad. Scored the 1st and almost scored his 2nd heading directly at the goalie when free and unmarked in the box. A downward header would have changed the story. But he’s been decent so far for a 20 yr old.

Osimhen has done more defending than attacking. The Kid still needs to learn what it takes to lead the attack for 200m Nigerians.

All together, sweet performance from the team.

Well well well! This shows that egbon Rohr was not playing when he said this is Super Eagles MkII! This is the better, improved future and now current version of the SE of Nigeria!!
I simply cannot get over how good this team is! For me, this has to stay as the first 11 from now on and everyone and even the only player I would not have said this about before this match Ahmed Musa AKA Air9ja must now make do with a place on the bench and wait for any opportunity to come into this fold because this team is simply SUBLIME!

I know, that is the difference between world class and promising!

Iwobi should either be burying that chance or at least be making the goalkeeper earn his wages big time.

        Instead, he fluffed it!

      Another brilliant save from Uzoho.
Almost identical freekick to the one which Mahrez used in ending our AFCON dreams.
Yet it was some oversabi, wicked bad belle people that mounted pressure on Rohr to drop Uzoho on the bench for AFCON.

Calm down boys, give a man an inch and he tries to take a mile, Iwobi this Iwobi that, he is a very good player and albeit not yet “world class” will get there, he is only in his early 20’s and the best we have in that position now, looking at the synergy of this particular team, I think it’s overkill at this stage to be critisizing any of the boys, this team for me is the best I have seen playing together for a long long tong time, and I mean by looking at the whole picture and working back through the team player for player, mono et mono, man for man, so please calm down abegi!
As for the the game, what I wouldnt like to see is that same malaise from our team of the boys taking their foot off the pedal and going into a lull, allowing the opposition to come back in…That would be disappointing and my only concern so far. We need to keep the metal on the pedal and continue to press hard both in attack and defence and score 5 against this team regardless of whether theyre at home or in the market or at their uncles yard it does not matter! Lewts give these a drubbing, winning breeds confidence and this team should feel very proud of themselves and rate themselves very highly indeed!

…that does not mean Iwobi should be toe-poking balls when he ought to wrap his feet around the ball. His age now has nothing to do with his shooting ability and technique. Those are things that differentiate an average player from a truly world class player. I know lots of players younger than Iwobi who would bury the chances he’s been frittering away.

At least he is not a Judas like Victor Moses or worse. Iwobi is a good player for 9ja and is committed and there’s a lot to be said for that, also his actual game is improving and you can tell they are now coaching him to improve his goals contribution which means his shooting etc must and will impeove, stop singling our good young platers out unnecessarily please.

Rhor has no pride and his team lacks pride.
The Ukrainians have not lost a friendly match in so many years,
The 1994 SE would have approached this game to break that record and set a new record, ” the first team to beat Ukraine in a friendly at home in so many years.

That has been my problem with Rhor, he doesn’t know that there is a character difference between Nigeria and Niger.

Whereas Nigeria is the most proud black race, especially those of us in diaspora, niger is like a zamfara state, and very anonymous in the committeee of nations, politically, economically, intelectually, even in sports .

The only comparison between Nigeria and niger is that they are rulled by the fulanis. That’s all.

      Dear NFF,

Please we need more of these types of friendlies. We dont want Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania type of friendlies anymore.

We need more of these types where our boys will face the type of opposition that will expose them and let them know they haven’t arrived yet even if they are 4 goals up. Even if we cant play the likes of England, France or Germany yet, the likes of Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Peru, even Iran that are above us in the FIFA rankings we can handle. Moreso, the experience we get playing against their likes will stand us in good stead when we eventually meet them at the global stage.

Abeg coach Rohr, football is a game of 90 mins, not 60, biko give us a team that can last for 90 mins on the pitch. The manner we took our foot off the pedal in the 2nd half leaves much to be desired.

The substitutes in today’s game didnt cover themselves in glory. Our game too a downward spiral the moment we started making those substitutions in the 63rd minute.

Over all, good game by all involved. We are not there yet, definitely, but we sure weren’t where we were before this game. But one thing is clear, our level don high well well reach where we fit vex if we nor win the next AFCON.

Great game. Over to the qualifiers in 2 months time…!

Another error is M,Simon, didn’t do much going front, but not bad in helping defence..

I’m so proud of the boys today. We actually won that game. Aribo has cemented his place in the SuperEagles first 11 going forward. Etebo was absolutely incredible all through and Iwobi seems to be growing into the number 10 role seamlessly. Though his shooting accuracy needs to improve to make him a world class player. I think that’s the only thing missing in his game. Chukwueze is a promising talent, but needs to be less selfish in front of goal. We should’ve scored about 7 goals in that match.

The speed in which we move the ball around was a positive, but it was slowed down when Iwobi was replaced and the Ukrainians took advantage. Esiti made some vital blocks when he came in, but the tempo of the game was too much for him and Etebo seems to be tiring. Therefore, we still need more options in midfield. Azeez, Zubby and possibly Onazi can still come back.

Uzoho showed he should be the numero uno going forward and for a very long time to come. We need a bit more steel in the heart of defense and a more speed in midfield to compliment Iwobi. Overall this is a SuperEagles side brimming with confidence and ascending to a very bright future in years to come starting from the AFCON qualifiers. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE.

Esiti! Esiti! Esitiiii ooooo! But why? Why makachukwu? Nitoriolun? Were you an agent? I had a bad feeling when Rohr made his first 2 changes and my fears were founded. The midfield collapsed (courtesy Siasia boy, Esiti), and the attack was kind of blunt courtesy Moses Simon for Kalu (who’s a more creative player and leader). Simon lost his mojo after that long injury layoff.

On a side note, SE needs to improve pass accuracy and Rohr’s substitution decision? Not convincing. Aribo! What a player! What a player! Little wonder Steven Gerrard is in love with him.

Joe Aribo impress me today he was too good in our midfield and Iwobi was outstanding in our midfield and delight to watch. Simon was unable to break the defence of ukrain. Super eagles tried. Our coach, Mr. Rohr should try and read games and know whom to substitude when eagles are under pressure. Immediately he substitude Iwobi, our midfield colaps. Thank God I didn’t watch the match.
I just finished watching the highlights on YouTube and what I saw in that match was selfish play.

Every one of them wanted to score. Yes I knew it. Excuses again? Why now. I’m tired of these excuses.

Nigeria were leading 2:0 but wait a minute my people, what else to do at that moment?

As a good coach, If your team can’t score more goals, defend the lead by passing the ball around and entertain the crowd. That is what Super Eagles known for but this one, what can I call it? I don’t know.

Stop blaming Esiti but put the blame on coach Rohr.

In this friendly, I expected two goalies to played in that match. One in the 1st half and another one in the second half but did we see that happening today?

I hope wrong substitutions didn’t happen today ba?

What happened when the scoreline was 2:1? The coach should have changed the tactics to defend the lead, did we see that?

Again, stop blaming the players for nothing.

Oga Rohr fans are covering the coach as usual. How market coach Rohr fans?

You don see am now? You can’t give what you don’t have.

Section, 8,10, and 12 in my constitution says, you can’t deceive me no more because you can only deceive yourselves.

As I said few days ago, Nigeria needed grade A friendly matches. NFF, please Nigeria want to play Italy, Brazil, Holland. Give us big top teams because we are tired of playing low ranking teams.

Coach Rohr should stepped down now before it is too late. NFF president should stepped down. They have failed.

New coaching staff on the line. That is the truth. That is the only option. I have said my own. Ire o.

        .
It was our 2-0 lead (a more handsome lead than you 2-1 lead) that the same coach you want to teach tactics, was trying to defend when he brought in the same Esiti you have been shouting about all these while and insulting Rohr that he is rigid and doesnt give room for new players. Now you Esiti ended up being a flop (same as you Onuachu) and you dont wanna take responsibility….???? LMAO.

        Mr I sabi pass….! Lol.

When we climb up again in the next FIFA ranking, come and pull us down na. hehehehhe

I was beginning to rejoice because,I had said our U-23 will beat this team, then suddenly their goals rushed in. I was screaming for changes like @deo,but after the changes, their goals. Hehe, phaps I for quiet o.
      Seriously my take on things:
1)This match result helps our ranking more than Ukraine’s,so that’s positive. This match happening was more of Ukraine’s efforts than Nigeria’s. So @Dr Drey says something,NFF should listen to on friendlies. For me,I trust this regime on friendlies, they’ve not done badly thus far.
      2) When some people complain of refs against African teams, they have some points. The ref kept pulling back Osimhen for doing nothing.Haba. Their goal stood, even after it was handled? Why? Okay why won’t he give the benefit of the doubt for a historically clean tacckling side as Nigeria. Even see the way he looks at our players when they try to protest.
3)The subs were even made late,to my mind.Iwobi should be preserved. It’s a friendly, early subs don’t mean losing the match. It’s the coach that needs to work on the quality of his bench and his in-game management. We have by far a more superior and numerous talent base to draw from, than Ukraine. @Sunnyb has spoken well as per proper competition in the squad and questionable substitution, which has been Rohrs weakness.
      4) What was this unnecessary mazy runs by Chukwueze et al? Oh yes this is Niger,so it’s in our blood, but scoring goals dey d blood too o. There has to be a BALANCE.We should have killed the game off as a contest before the refree even had an opportunity for wayo.
What was this Mo Salah spirit, that Mane teaches us is not good for teamwork. Okay seriously, individual play cost us too much today. Some lil one-two’s here and there could have killed them off. We already had a scary frontline with pace, pass the ball and move and goals come in. If we had been four or five up,we could now be doing the playing to the gallery thing our U-23 did today. They did that because, they were 5nil ahead.
      5) I’m glad people can see that we can rest players and still perform. How glad I am that golden boy,Ndidi, was rested. God has blessed this country with too much talent.I repeat our U-23 team will beat Ukraine’s senior side. I hope Mr Rohr learns fast on resting players. The Brazilian model,I enumerated recently can help.

So overall not a bad performance, as it were.

Abeg o what’s all this talk now about the coaches wrong substitutions, this our we must win syndrome is starting to block our natural sense of reasoning_ the players dt came on are the ones to put the blame on not the coach for crying out loud.
For instance esiti for Iwobi was very good change on paper considering he is a Defensive Midfielder and Aribo can play attacking midfield to cover for Iwobi with us leading by 2 goals’ also moses ought have brought his experience but chose to continue d Rugby type of play which he did during the Afcon.
Its a Friendly and notes have been taken already. The boys did well in front of buzzing Ukraine Fans.
We started with our best Naija11 Ukraine Ended with their best 11, the essence of friendly games is for every invited player to be given a close look in_ so chill umu-nna m

I was gushing at the plat of the Super Eagles today. They practically took the Ukrainians to the cleaners until they put their foot off the pedal. This is a young enterprising and dynamic Super Eagles team that will grow to become like the golden era if well managed. Their inability to finish the Ukrainians by being a bit more clinical is something they should work on, not just the coach but individually as they go back to their club duties. Semi Ajayi did well in centre back pairing with Troost-Ekong, Aina was rampaging on the right. Aribo is a genuine article, cool, calm, calculated midfielder, adept at popping up in the right place in the box to convert. Etebo clearly does not need to play for Stoke come January. He is bigger than championship football. Esiti is not a Super Eagles material. period!! Uzoho.. Uzoho… How Akpeyi manipulated his way to become our number 1 gk.in AFCON 2019 is only God knows. Uzoho is miles better, calm, composed and better reflexes. Victor Osihmen’s as Nigeria’s top marksman has started. Iheanacho must seek solution to his attitude, it could plunge his career on a downward trend.
Finally the ref and his linesmen knew what they were doing with their clear bias. They didn’t want Ukraine and Shevchenko to be embarrassed in Dnipro

Nigeria were robbed cleanly!! So many off-calls from the referee and the Second goal by Ukraine was clearly Handball. The team really played well. Thank God we caught JOE ARIBO 10 before England. That guy is super good. Our future looks very bright. That attack was dangerous. Our Coach only needs to improve in his substitution making and the team will come super good

      JOE ARIBO,JOE ARIBO….
I literally had tears watching this guy.
I tuned in late to watch the game, I didn’t see the line up but I kept asking my wife, who is this guy,who is this guy? Until the commentator mentioned his name.
OMG!! I almost jumped off my feet for his every move.
Oh thank Rohr for inviting this guy.
I’m super happy. If that’s the only positive of this friendly, I’m very OK.
JOE ARIBO,JOE ARIBO,JOE ARIBO….We are in love with you.

That starting 11 should be set in stone – Well almost, only with the inclusions back in of Ndidi and tell him to dress up well well because he is trying to do pass himself these days, he must remain content and resolute in the role he plays, a midfield destroyer of sorts who carries the fight to the opposition to make sure we are not overrun in the midfield and who occasionally lets off that thunderbolt of a shot from 25 – 30 yards out which end up comfortably nestled in the top corner more often than not, that is his job, let him not start getting above his station and start trying to be playmaker and dribbler and all those things he has been trying to become lately! I can’t shout! And the second guy has to be Leon B, we have to get him fit, even if the NFF has to start acting as his agent and get him into a club at a good level where he will play regularly, do that and we need him in the SE badly because of the streak he has in him which helps our fighting spirit and does not let us get beat up like we used to get physically beat up by the likes of SA, Angola and any Tom, Dick and even Harry who has a little bit of bully or enlightenment against colonialism about them or indeed the colonials themselves ie Europeans, South Americans etc etc, So what I am saying is the we try and incorporate these 2 guys and of course our captain, “Air Nigeria himself” Malam Ahmed Musa, anybody else (especially anyone who was previously part of the outfield 11) who didnt start yesterday and including the 3 guys I have just mentioned should just forget about the SE from now on! Of course we will need a bench and on there we can find the likes of Onazi, and many of the other good guys (I am sorry but I can’t recall the names right now, but if anyone really needs me to name them, then I will) Anyway as I was saying, we need a strong bench and put a huge emohasis on new talent and new discoveries because we have an embarrasment of riches as everyman and his dog knows, we always have and always will! Finally and sorry to seem like I am singling him out, but I can no longer see Moses Simon’s role or usefulness in that team, but maybe he can come good again , so maybe he can also be accomodated on the bench for a bit longer so that he can shake off his cobwebs and I will only have Iheanacho on the bench for sentimental reasons for now, but as the talent pool increases, I am afraid he might have to vacate the seat he is occupying because we cannot afford to carry anybody. I refuse to shout oo!
