Okereke’s Goal Inspires Venezia To First Win Over Mourinho’s Roma In 22 Years

James AgberebiBy James AgberebiNovember 7, 202163 Comments2 Mins Read

David Okereke emerged the hero for Venezia as he scored the winning goal in his side’s shock 3-2 home victory against Jose Mourinho’s Roma in Sunday’s Serie A clash, Completesports.com report.

It was Venezia’s first league win over Roma since 1999.

Okereke has now scored his third goal in 11 appearances in the Italian elite division.

Also in action for Venezia was Super Eagles right-back Tyronne Ebuehi, who came on in the 77th minute for his seventh league appearance.

The win saw Venezia halt a run of three consecutive league fixtures without victory.

They now move up to 14th position on 12 points while Roma are fifth on 19 points.

It was the perfect start for Venezia as Mattia Aramu whipped in a free kick and Mattia Caldara stuck out a leg in front of Bryan Cristante to prod it past Rui Patricio on three minutes.

Venezia should have been 2-0 up on 35 minutes, as Okereke shrugged off Marash Kumbulla only to curl inches wide of the far post.

Roma equalized on 43 minutes as Sergio Romero parried the Pellegrini tap-in on Abraham’s header down, but could do nothing on Eldor Shomurodov’s follow-up.

The turnaround was complete in first half stoppages, Abraham chesting down Shomurodov’s cross from the left, turning Ceccaroni and firing in from six yards.

In the 65th minute Venezia equalized after they received a penalty for Bryan Cristante clumsily bundling into the back of Caldara.

Martin Aramu sent Rui Patricio the wrong way to convert, meaning for the first time this season, Venezia scored two goals in a single Serie A game.

And in the 74th minute Venezia made it 3-2 when Okereke sprung the offside trap on a ball over the top and kept his cool to beat Patricio after a little step-over.

In other countries players who hug the headlines in Europe’s elite leagues are the players that represent the national team…….But in a certain African country this logic doesn’t work that way……. you will hear words like “is it anybody that scores for his club that will be called to the national team?”……. “National team football is different from club football”…… “He should keep working harder his chance will come”…….”he is not tested and trusted”…….”he is not Rhor’s trusted soldier”…….Mr okereke just forget about National team…….Keep upgrading your status clubwise and one day there will be a major outcry for the interpretation of the real meaning of top5 league requirements Rhor once postulated.

@Akp you are correct. Rohr has finally forgotten about top 5 leagues noise. He has allowed the Nigerian magic to get at him.

@Akp, so because Okereke has scored 3 goals in 9 games now, Rohr should invite him asap? Nawa for you o, your MVP Dennis played 78 mins against Arsenal today and he was missing in action, no threats whatsoever, no key passes.

I will advise you to have patience my brother, leave the coaches to do their job because they know better than you and Rohr has a lot more to lose than you if the team do not perform

Even the commentator called him Dennis without the Menace today. Let’s allow these boys to mature in the game with a cool head rather than hyping them to highest heavens.

It was because Dennis played in Champions league and scored against Real Madrid that he refused to agree playing for the U-23 team when Rohr seconded him there to help overcome the stubborn Libya who won the first leg by 2:0. Osimhen agreed to play that match and scored hat trick to help the team to progress. That’s patriotism shown by Osimhen but hey, your Dennis was too big for U-23 team at the age of 21 yrs

@Akp yes o Oga he must be proven and tested. Consistency matters. Let it not be that we invited a one-game wonder or one season wonder to the squad. The likes of their osimehn started proving themselves season from season from Lille to Napoli. Nacho from mancity (even with the small playing time then) to now liecester city. Please no scatter dis table. We love the way players are being called to the national team based on their consistency, persistency team play, and hardwork. You must truely deserve it. No be say one player go scorw one goal today maybe na fluke self or offside position LMAO…una go come dis forum dey disturb person…

I didn’t say he should not prove himself……I only said everyone in the SE squad should also prove themselves…….The rules should be applied to everyone in the squad……Every player should hug the headlines once in a while to prove himself……But no…..Some players are……”tested and trusted”….. “Rhor’s trusted soldier”…..some don’t even need to play in a recognized European league to be included……there are some players we don’t even hear of apart from during international duties when they pop up and grab a shirt……that’s my point…..rules should be rules,no matter the player involved.

How will you feel if you were employed in a company, being their star worker and rose to become a manager but all of a sudden there was this important project your company won that needs to be executed with stellar accomplishments. Then your CEO found thus young up and coming talented chap and replaced you with the guy?

That’ll be highly unproductive, the best bet will be to second that brilliant guy to work with you for excellent outcome

A honed performance of the Amaju Pinnick’s NFF youth development product. David Okereke was honed through the u23 youth programme. He represented u23 Eagles in 2019 and even registered a goal. Keep flying boy as we await your invitation to the national side. Good luck dude, up Nigeria.

Those negative football fans will ask who is he coming to bench in Super Eagles? Yet the quack coach is ready to change his preferred lone attacker upfront Nigeria’s for a twin strike partnership because of Odion Ighalo… when they are trying to go and resurrect the likes of Yekini and Usiyen back to the national team in the name of needed experience you will wonder why young dual national eligible players are running away from coming near the business centre (Super Eagles)… we never know wetin good for us!

Hahahahaha…if all your “young” one-weekend wonders were delivering when given their chances the quack coach wouldn’t need to go call back Yekini and Usiyen……LMAOooo.

Confused set of people. 10 CFs must make the SE list of call ups all the time….LMAOOoo. Even an imbecile knows that football is not played by 11 Centre Forwards at a go.

Even if the coach lists 10 CFs in his list of call ups, some will still need to WAIT FOR THEIR TURNS to get unto the pitch. Its that simple…..Kindergarten stuff that some people cannot just wrap their heads around……LMAOoooo

Today now the gnashing and crying for callups is Okereke, next week it will be Iyayi Atienwen, the upper week it will be Okpotu, then Ajayi, then even other person that strikes the bar in Europe….LMAOoooo. Never in my life have I seen hatred confuse human beings this badly…..LMAOOooo.

Okereke made his name playing in serie B, then he moved to Belgium and things went south. Now he is back in serie A and he is out to prove he can mix it with the big boys. He isnt doing too badly but he needs to be more consistent if he wants to be considered by the Super Eagles handlers. There are a great number of players waiting for a call up to the super eagles. Unfortunately there are no available positions for them to fill.so they all have to keep fit, keep performing well in games and hoping for the best.

My own is every SE player should be playing in a top5 league in Europe….. England France Spain Germany Italy……If not they should be playing for a recognized Champions league campaigner like Porto Ajax Rangers Benfica Lisbon PSV Brugge CSKA Andelecht Galatasaray Fenabache Olympiacos etc…… Exceptions should only be given to players under the Age of 23 or goalkeepers inorder for them to develop in lower leagues and move to the top5 league……. Enough of old Division 2 players…… Enough of old ,Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Turkey, Kuwait,China league players………We need to raise the standard of the national team if we have any hope of competing at the world stage and even in Africa…….Even most African minors now have very good players in top leagues in Europe and they are bridging the Gap between us and them gradually.

Oga…if you are proven (at any level), YOU ARE PROVEN…if you like go and later be playing in Ajegunle league….if you are proven, you will return to where you were before and still prove yourself again and again.

We’ve seen proven players leave Europe for China or the MLS and return for another stint and still prove themselves again. Henry, Drogba, Ibra, Paulinho etc.

Man U signed Ighalo from the Chinese league and he scored more goals in his 1st 600 minutes for Man U, than Cavani scored in his own first 600 minutes.

It is left for those who are not proven yet to move up and go and show they can cut it at the highest level if they want to be recognized.

If you are proven…..YOU ARE PROVEN…!!!

Nobody will retire anybody for the young ones…they themselves should retire the old ones by themselves….If they cant, then its their cup of coffee…it simply means they are not serious yet. They shouldn’t blame anybody. Old players are Nigerians too

      WHO IS AFRAID OF IGHALO?

If all our young strikers show without a doubt that they are better than Ighalo, he will be forced to retire. He would have no choice. If our strikers had taken their chances in the last world cup qualifiers, Ighalo would not be in the current list.
Ighalo will not retire for retiring sake, or retire just to “give the young ones a chance”. It’s never done that way, and to expect that is unrealistic.
If you want to be the king, you have to dethrone the current king. The current king will not say – HMMM, I HAVE BEEN ON THE THRONE FOR LONG NOW. LET ME GIVE THE CROWN TO THIS YOUNG MAN. IT IS HIS TURN.
It’s a dog eat dog world. Especially in football.
No sane person who needs surgery will chose a young surgeon just because “he is young and needs a chance”. A sane person will ALWAYS GO FOR THE BEST SURGEON AVAILABLE. YOUNG OR OLD, EXPERIENCED OR NOT, YOU ALWAYS GO FOR THE BEST.
If the young surgeon is not the best in his field, he needs to go and work with the best, to learn and grow.
Same thing with selecting players for the national team. You pick only the best, not young players you want to “give a chance”.
As long as the selection is done with integrity and based on merit, it doesn’t matter who is selected. I want to believe and have faith that Ighalo was selected on merit. If he was not selected based on merit, then and only then would I be displeased.
So all those shouting Ighalo up and down should give us evidence that his invitation was not based on merit.

Victor Osimhen says he will gladly welcome Odion Ighalo back to the national team amid reports that the latter is considering a return to International football.

Ighalo retired from the Super Eagles after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He was top scorer at the competition with five goals, with the West Africans finishing in third position.

The Manchester United recently stated that he is considering a return to the Super Eagles and Osimhen has no qualms with his planned comeback.

“He is always welcome, he contributed a lot for the National team and even at the Afcon in 2019, whether I am playing or I’m on the bench, watching him from the side will also help me learn a lot from him. I have no problem with it at all,” Osimhen told ojbsport.com.

Ngwa go and kill Ighalo because he lacks “Courtesy” Na.

But before you kill Ighalo you will need to first kill Ibrahimovic because, at 40, I have lost count of the number of times he has come out of retirement.

Then remember to also kill the likes of Hummels and Muller too.

If the so called youngsters were rattling nets left right and centre rather than showing off on the pitch during important qualifiers, anybody would even notice Ighalo in the first place.

ANY YOUNGSTER THAT CANNOT RETIRE IGHALO FROM THE SE IS NOT WORTHY OF A PLACE IN OUR NATIONAL TEAM YET…..and that’s a fact…!!!

Milner and Vardy retired because the young Lions are performing even beyond the Vardy era, they recently reached the Final of Euro ’21 only loosing by Penalty shootout, and they are comfortably on TOP in their group en route WC qualification.

Same cannot be said of our Young Eagles, they recently threw away a 4:1 lead to draw 4:4 to a common S/L the moment Musa and Balogun left the pitch (that’s the importance of leadership) and toiled hard for 95 mins to score just 1 goal against ordinary CAR in Lagos losing 0:1 at the end.

So you see why Ighalo’s invitation is justified, even if Ighalo did not get to score, am sure his presence will galvanise these young strikers to perform creditably well

@All…..My point is that national team caps should be earned by club pedigree and performance not by national team performance itself…….that is how it is done in Europe……Most European player retire from international football once they are no longer playing top league football……Not because they can no longer perform at the national team level but because they acknowledge those that are younger and still competing at a higher level at club level and they feel others should also try their luck……..But in Nigeria the case is different……Even when they have returned to Sunday Sunday league and the opportunity arises to play for the national team, they will shamelessly pounce on it…….smh

Ibrahimovic at the grand old age of 40 is still a member of the Swedish national team.
Sergio Busquets at 33 yrs nko? The guy full ground for Spanish national team.
Sergio Aguero at 33 yrs of age? Still kicking it with Messi in the Argentina national team.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang at 32 yrs of age is waxing stronger for the Gabonese national team.
In the past, Mexico used Rafa Marquez well into his late 30s. They did not retire him to give younger players a chance, because he was the best they had.
What of Roger Milla’s exploits at the 1990 world cup at the age of 34? So Cameroon should have left him behind out of courtesy for younger strikers?
Jordi Alba, Angel Di Maria, Marco Reus, Karim Benzema, Dani Parejo and a long, long list of other players are still playing for their national teams, because they are the best their nation’s have at the moment.
SO WETIN CONCERN COURTESY FOR THE MATTER WEY DEY GROUND?
WHY SHOULD IGHALO BE AN EXCEPTION AT 32 YRS OF AGE?
ARE YOU SAYING ALL THESE PLAYERS LACK COURTESY, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT STEP ASIDE FOR YOUNGER ONES?

Hahahahaha…..Pompei…since some drunkards claimed you are Dr.Drey and Dr.Drey is you, let me join you in laughing, this time in zig-zag motion.

Someone should pls kindly help us tell Mr Akp. to kindly resign from where he is working now out of “Courtesy” for the many out there who are unemployed and will be willing to take up his job……LMAOoooo…he should pleas stop being greedy and selfish since he has had some time on the job and earned some income from it already…..LMAOoooo

When he’s have done that, then I’ll start taking him seriously.

Our people say “madman sweet to watch, but e nor sweet to get as pikin”.

Some things are so so easier said than done.

Once again, ANY YOUNGSTER THAT CANNOT CONFINE IGHALO TO THE BENCH RIGHT FROM TRAINING, OR RETIRE IGHALO OUTRIGHTLY FROM THE SE IS NOT WORTHY OF A PLACE IN OUR NATIONAL TEAM YET…..!!!

If Osimhen and Iheanacho should get serious and combine to net 4-5 goals vs Liberia and Onuachu wakes up from his slumber and joins the duo in their evil plot to massacre Capve verde with 4-5 goals share in between them 4 days latter, I bet nobody will give a hoot about Ighalo anymore. It will now become an uphill task for Ighalo himself to outdo these boys, and he will almost blame himself for accepting to return. That is how we have been retiring players in the SE for ages (unless captains who were allowed to exhaust themselves or those retired by internal quarrels)…or did anybody hear Echiejile announce any retirement from international football…? or Ambrose, or Ideye or Ogu….? Even Mikel gave up after small boys like Etebo and Iwobi were zooming past him in training at the 2019 AFCON.

If Ighalo is a nobody, then let the youngsters welcome the challenge and truly prove to us that bringing him back was a waste of confidence. They should please shame Rohr on our behalf…..LMAOoooo

Oops, Milla was actually 38 at the 1990 world cup. Yet Cameroon did not decide to give younger strikers a chance. They took him to the world cup because he was one of their best.
Make we siddon here dey “give younger strikers a chance” with competitive games. Friendlies and dead rubbers is the opportunity to try unproven strikers, not competitive games!

“All…..My point is that national team caps should be earned by club pedigree and performance not by national team performance itself” – AKP.

Hahahaha, that is indeed one of the most irrational statements I’ve read on this forum. A classic fallacy.
So performance in the national teams is not enough to earn national team caps?
Wow, this is really deep thinking! I’m having a headache right now, looool!
Dis one don pass rocket science ooo.
Na so craze dey take start small small ooo. Make una come hold this guy before he enter market ooo!
It’s alarming that people are now barking like dogs with Ighalo’s name – IGHALO, IGHALO, IGHALO, WOOF, WOOF, WOOF!
This obsession with Ighalo has become decidedly unhealthy.

Let us try make our opinions be devoid of hates and sentiments, inasmuch some persons (myself inclusive)may not be pleased with Odion Ighalo invitation to the national team, we got to stop looking at the matter with jaundice eye, Yes we got plethora of strikers in Europe doing well in their various clubs but truth be told they keep struggling at the national team because national team football differs from club football, in a club you got almagamation of players of precocious talents from different walks of life in each departments unlike the national team you got to make use the available players, for instance we lack creative midfielders but got gazillions of good strikers, that explains why some of our strikers are underwhelming with their performance.

It is only natural that the gaffer Gernoht Rohr calls on his most trusted soldiers who knows how to deliver the goodsmundialg with the limited available resources, many will argue that these young players needs more game time to hone their skills to reach near perfection but given the crucial stage we are at qualification the coach has deem it right not to experiment but rather get the results with his proven comrades beside only the coach will be held accountable if we fail to qualify for the football mundial in Qatar next year and be hit with the sledgehammer, we should allow the coach do his job,the man deserves accolades than this backlash from some hommies here, let us trust his judgment s, the man has done well for us, he has scored way above average, we should show him respect and quit the needless complain, he knows these players better, Soar higher my darling Super eagles, God dey Kampe for our side.
