Focus Shifts to AFCON 2025 After 2026 World Cup Play-off Heartbreak
• Following Nigeria’s dramatic penalty shoot-out loss to DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African Play-offs final, the Super Eagles are expected to redirect full attention to preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Coach Eric Sekou Chelle is set to overhaul key areas of the squad, with emphasis on restoring mental toughness and improving tactical cohesion ahead of the continental campaign.
Injured Players Target 2025 Returns
• Some players who missed the crucial play-off fixtures — including injured forward Cyriel Dessers and defender Ola Aina — are expected to be available and fully fit as Nigeria rebuilds for the 2025 AFCON following the World Cup setback.
Technical Review to Address World Cup Qualification Collapse
• The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to conduct full technical review following the Super Eagles' failure to reach the 2026 World Cup — a review to examine tactical decisions, player performance, coaching methods, and administrative support during the qualifiers. Outcomes from the assessment are expected to guide reforms aimed at strengthening the Eagles' competitiveness.

Super Eagles Coach & Staff
Head Coach
When Eric Sekou Chelle took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025, it marked more than a change of coach — it heralded a new football philosophy.
The Franco-Malian tactician, born in 1977, brings a blend of calm authority, tactical intelligence, and cross-cultural insight shaped by his experiences in France, Mali, and Algeria.
Chelle, who guided Mali to the 2023 AFCON quarter-finals, is known for balancing attacking ambition with defensive discipline. His philosophy centres on “control without rigidity,” encouraging intelligent, adaptable football built on teamwork and structure.
Favouring a flexible 4-3-1-2 system, Chelle has merged Nigeria’s natural flair with European tactical precision. His leadership style — professional, composed, and quietly demanding — is re-energised the Super Eagles.
Beyond short-term success, Chelle’s vision is long-term: building a unified, tactically educated Nigerian side capable of sustained excellence on the global stage.
