Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has described Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s last-gasp goal against Real Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League as historic.
Benfica were heading for elimination despite leading 3-2 with seconds of stoppage time remaining before Trubin met a free kick to score the goal they needed to qualify for the playoff round on goal difference at the expense of their glamour club opponent.
Real had hoped to finish in the top eight, but their 15 points from eight games were not enough as they slumped to ninth, and they finished the match with nine men as Raul Asencio and Rodrygo were sent off.

Reacting after the game, the Portuguese tactician, in a chat with Movistar Plus, stated that he praised Trubin’s exceptional goal against Real Madrid.
“I knew we weren’t through yet, that 3-2 wasn’t enough, and we were lucky with a set piece,” Mourinho said.
“Our goalkeeper Trubin, who is two metres tall, went into the box and scored a fantastic goal, a historic goal … It felt like the stadium was going to collapse. Incredible.”

If you see as I wake everybody with my shout eh, that was too pulsating and dramatic finish.
We (super Eagles) really need to have set piece coaches, ah.
We can’t use set pieces often to change games, we don’t have players that shoot accurately from outside the box, we don’t have players that fall dramatically in the penalty box after a push.
We didn’t score a penalty in all of our afcon 2025 14 goals.
