Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has disclosed that Arsenal star Eberechi Eze was released in 2011 from the Gunners youth academies for failing to meet up with their benchmark.
Recall that Eze had joined Arsenal aged eight, coming through a system packed with technically gifted players during the Arsène Wenger era. Decisions were unforgiving, based on how coaches judged development and physical potential at the time.
After five years in the academy, he was told in 2011 that he would not be kept on.
Speaking with ARISE News after his impressive hattrick performance against Tottenham, the Nigerian international stated that Eze was released because there were other players who were better than him then.

“In Europe, every club have the U10s and U11s, and they graduate.
“Every year, there’s screening; if you don’t get to the next level, they take you out.
“For example, you know the story of Ebere (Eze) now playing for Arsenal. When he was in Arsenal, he couldn’t make it to the next level.
“It doesn’t mean that he wasn’t good enough or he would not get to that level, which he did at some point.
“There are other players who were better than him then, so if you can’t get to the next level, you can go to another academy.”
