AFCON 2025 burst into life on Sunday night with a colourful and high-energy opening ceremony at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, marking the official start of Africa’s flagship football tournament and underlining its growing global stature, Completesports.com reports.
Before a capacity crowd and a worldwide television audience, Morocco welcomed Africa and the rest of the world with a ceremony that blended music, culture, technology and symbolism, setting an ambitious tone for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.
AFCON 2025: Rabat Hosts a Grand Opening Night
The opening ceremony was held shortly before the tournament’s first match between hosts Morocco and Comoros, which kicked off at 20h00 local time. Senior dignitaries were in attendance, led by Morocco’s Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, alongside top officials from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.

The ceremony also celebrated Morocco’s identity as host nation, with artistic elements reflecting the country’s history, hospitality and role as a bridge between Africa, Europe and the wider world.
AFCON 2025 Broadcasts Reach Record Global Audience
The opening match and ceremony were believed to have been broadcast in around 180 territories worldwide, including emerging markets in Asia such as Japan and South Korea, parts of North and South America, Mexico and at least 18 European countries.
This unprecedented reach reflects the expanding commercial and sporting appeal of AFCON 2025, ensuring that millions of fans across Africa and the global African diaspora were able to follow the tournament live from the opening night.

After the ceremony, Morocco delivered on the pitch, defeating Comoros 2–0 to open their Group A campaign on a winning note. Goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi delighted the home crowd and capped a memorable night in Rabat.
