“As we speak now, I’m in my house resting,” Okonkwo began. “I had to leave the club to save my life.”
“Football is all about pressure, but when it goes beyond the club’s desire to win and turns into open and physical confrontation, then I had to run for my dear life.”
Okonkwo’s Exit Linked To Internal Confrontation
The coach further alleged that a former Calabar Rovers handler — whose identity he declined to disclose — was at the centre of the alleged plot against him.
According to Okonkwo, the unnamed individual had previously coached one of Nigeria’s junior national teams.
“If it was just a threat, one could understand. But when it reached the stage of open confrontation, then I had to run for my life.
“The management is aware of everything. I resigned because my life is more important than any job,” Okonkwo narrated.
