Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has described the dominance of Team Delta in the Nigeria Sports sector as a testament to the state government’s sustained investment in the sports sector.
Governor Oborevwori made the statement after receiving the winners trophy of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024.
Governor Oborevwori represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Etacherure Ejiro Terry said Team Delta’s s victory was also a reward for the government’s dedication to the development of the youth through sports stressing that the State government would not relent in investing in sports in the state.
He commended the athletes for giving their all to ensure the state maintained its stranglehold in the Nigerian sports sector while assuring them of his administrations commitment to rewarding excellence.
The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori thanked the Governor for his sustained support for sports as that was the elixir to the state’s triumph at the games.
Mr Oborevwori also commended the state’s athletes for being good ambassadors they showed decorum and professionalism even when faced with challenges.

He assured them of the State governments dedication to their welfare at all times.
Meanwhile Team Delta finished the games with 126 gold, 100 silver and 111 bronze medals to claim a fifth consecutive trophy and 9th since it’s first win at Bauchi 2000.
Hosts Team Ogun pipped Bayelsa on the last day to finish in second place after garnering 93 gold, 65 silver and 50 bronze medals with Bayelsa which was primed to finish second after occupying that spot slipped to 3rd place after claiming 92 gold, 65 silver and 71 bronze medals with Team Rivers in 4th spot after collecting 76 gold, 58 silver and 65 bronze medals while Team Edo finished in 5th place after picking 73 gold, 101 silver and 119 bronze medals.
Four time winners Team Lagos is in 6th spot after gathering 38 gold, 43 silver and 88 bronze medals followed by Team Oyo which has 38 gold, 37 silver and 51 bronze medals while Team FCT placed 8th after claiming 14 gold, 8 silver and 17 bronze medals.
Team Osun is placed 9th after picking 13 gold, 3 silver and 11 bronze medals with Team Akwa Ibom completing the top ten after collecting 12 gold, 11 silver and 20 bronze medals.
The next edition of the National Sports Festival holds in Enugu next year.
