Looking at the team selection, it does look like the coach would go with a 4-3-3 formation but it remains to be seen.

Benjamin Frederick’s versatility continues to see him earn a place in the starting lineup. Had Ndidi been suspended, it is not a stretch to see him replaced by Fredrick.

Semi Ajayi is back and he will have his work cut out against an unpredictable Congolese strike force.

Chelle has gone for midfielders high on defensive orientation. Onyeka and Iwobi played centre midfield with high emphasis on defensive duties under Peseiro. So, I think this shows that Chelle is not taking Congo for granted.

Up front, Ademola Lookman has another opportunity to prove critics wrong. Chukwueze too has come under fire from certain quarters for blowing hot and cold, so both wingers have something to prove.

Osihmen has nothing to prove. He will miss sitters but will make up for those missing with heart, guts and, yes, goals whether he scores or he supplies.

Osihmen is a mixed bag, perhaps the best mix bag in the history of football in how often he misses sitters but never misses the chance to make up for those missed opportunities.

I think we are good. This squad has my vote of confidence.

      The defence is capable.
      The midfield is defensive.
      The attack has bite.

All is left is for Nwabali to stay dialled in and I think we are good to go!

Can’t fault the line up. Balanced and compact. Just wish there was a spot for Akor. I would have preferred an attacking trio of Osimhen, Lookman and Akor. But Chuks on a good day is also a good option. Nwabali, calm down and keep a cool head.
Most important, let’s take our chances when they come!

This Chelle guy is making the classic mistake of trying to start with Iwobi all the time – I hope it doesn’t vome back to bite him in the proverbial- however because It’s only DR Congo we may just be fine, but this guy has to wise up! He can sell his career and more importantly Nigeria’s hopes down the drain with stupidity about Iwobi, he should have found a better option gor that place in the team by now anyway – Also I hope the team handlers know about the dangerous players in this DRC team and none more so than Chancel Mbemba!!

      A balanced lineup..
The team can win the match but Nwabali must stay composed and focused throughout the duration. Additionally, Iwobi must step up to avoid a repeat of his last three performances for the team.
I think the match will be won in the midfield and by chances conversion.

Onyeka is becoming a force of nature in right attacking midfield for Nigeria: 2 goals in 3 games.

We are not playing 4-3-3 like CSN reported.
      We are playing 4-3-1-2.

      Nwabali

      Frederick-Ajayi-Bassey-Zaidu

      Onyeka-Ndidi-Iwobi

      Chukwueze (playmaker)

      Osihmen — Lookman

      The emphasis is currently “narrow”.

Before the equalizer, I worried about the sluggishness of the defenders. They’re doing the same thing Nwabali was doing, holding on to the ball and inviting trouble.

My only issue with Iwobi is his tackling skills. Ndidi, just stop the ball or shoot it out.

We should be leading by high margin if not for some strange passes and final ball. And the multiple back pass plus the poor ball usage is another headache. Every solid team dominates possession at forward positions and not backwards in defense line. Chelle can not be blamed for some senseless play i see in this first half, because our players can not use wisdom to make chances work.

Failure of Lukeman, Iwobi and Chukwueze are causing trouble for the defence and giving Congo courage to come out.
Why is it taken the coach to replace them

Ndidi basically passed the ball to the Congolese attacker to score their equaliser- chain of errors started with Iwobi passing the ball to a Congolese player in midfield. The sort of things he did against a weaker Gabonese side and got away with it; against a fitter, phisical and deadlier Congo you can gift them such opportunity as they will accept the offer with full chest and punish you, as they did.

Well upto Chelle and the coaching team to do the needful for the 2nd half.

Lookman will cost us qualification for the world cup.Aside the last Afcon,Lookman has been in poor form for the super eagles.
However, due to his status as African best for the past year,he will continue to get the nod of the gaffer to the detriment of the team.I will suggest the coach yank off Lookman for Simon at the start of the second half.
Another equally bad player is Alex Iwobi. In his case there’s no like for like replacement,Fisayo Dele-Bashiru who would have come in his place is out injured, sadly.
Congo dr is a good opponent capable of edging this duel we have to be focused to the details,i don’t know why keeping a lead is hard for the super eagles.

It’s halftime, and Chelle is being tactically shackled and subsequently outwitted by Desabre.

Everything he lined up coming into this match ended in 20 minutes.

As I have always said, when star power meets star power, the bench will make the difference.

Knowing Chelle for who he is, he will pull out Lookman for Simon, Samu for Ejuke, Onyeka for Akor or Arokodare. And that is where it will all collapse.

DRC is not Benin with 2-3rd division and clubless players, nor Gabon with 30+ year olds, nor the PSL level players we played in the group phase

Give us this day O lord. These boys must not miss this World Cup.
We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help in this winner-takes-all match. Our help will only come from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”

This game is still a contest because of the extra man we have in the middle. If we had played only Iwobi and Ndidi, the going would have been much tougher.
With Iwobi not clicking today, perhaps an Arokodare can come in and pair Akor in the attack.

We have become even thinner in a midfield that we have already lost control of.

From here on, it will take a miracle of enormous proportions for Nigeria to win this game.

Let’s just pray for another gift from DR Congo or the match drags to penalties.

We haven’t got a team. The distance betwen the players is just too wide, especially in the midfied. Build up play rather pedestrian and losing all the 50-50 duels. It appears even the players have lost believe on losing Osimhen. The dearth of attacking midfielders doesn’t help….Nididi, Onyedika and Onyeka are all similar in style, slow and defensive. As for the goalkeeper, i rest my case…. a good shot-stopper but too error prone and hasn’t got a good command of his box.

Arokodare should not be in an eagles shirt, Lookman is off form. Is Ajayi the best defender we have ?

We were completely outplayed in all departments, particularly in the midfield. The coach was exposed today. We could not play through their press and resorted to lumping the ball to our strikers in what was a total indictment on our MIDFIELD players.

When you have a mediocre team and awful administrators, this is what you reap. If we had won today, it would have been HEARTACHE DEFERRED. Defeat would still have come in the future. All because of systemic failures.
Truth is we don’t deserve to qualify. Congo were miles ahead of us. The individual effort was ok, but the talent fell short. With more quality, we should have seen off DRC.
With better administration, we definitely would have already qualified, and would not need playoffs.

I agree with you @Femi. Chelle should have brought in Ekong towards the end of extra time to take the first Penalty. Ekong has never missed a penalty for SE- Scored all 3 taken, including in the Shoot-out in semi-finals against South Africa- in the last Afcon in Ivory coast. He also scored a penalty against Lesotho in the group qualifiers, match day 9.

I was wondering who will take the penalties with Osimhen and Ekong not in the field! Well it shows Nigeria SE is a one-man team- all of the 5 games he did not play in the WCQ group stage- we could not win, not even against lowly Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Benin who even beat us 2-1 away.

Time to find replacement for these slow and weak players with young, fitter and pacier ballers, especially in midfield- Ndidi, Iwobi, Ajayi, Moses Simon, Chukwueze, Arokodare, even Ejuke. Tital overhaul before Afcon.

No more poaching of average European players if we are too poach players of dual national status it must be those who have 2 options, The Saka’s and Eze’s and Musiala’s and Alaba’s Akanji’s not average half baked players like Ajayi, Osayi Samuels Ekong and co the ones with only a fall back plan. NFF needs to stop this rubbish it is enough our football has descended to the depths of were we do not recognize and it will get worse.

On one hand with a functioning Federation we could have had a line up of Osimhen Saka Eze Alaba in the same team but because NFF always concedes defeat when a dual national player is of world class caliber and they do not even approach them since Gasau took charge how many Dual nationals have made the switch? Non..

We need a functional football system functioning league no more quota system in Youth teams as that has even caused a block for another 2years now. Our football is really in deep trouble if serious intervention is not met.

Definitely I will not be watching the World Cup. I’m not interested.

To you Osimhen, please don’t honour any invitation from Nigeria anymore. Let the nff bring their family any play the nations cup.

This NFF is very wicked and shameless. May the wrath of God pursue and punish you in Jesus name.

I heard there was a ruckus at half time that made Osimehin to be taken off. Still to confirm. But these guys don’t deserve to be in the world cup. They did not take it serious from the beginning. Wasted generation

I said it!, abi did I not say it???

Even though I strongly prayed against it that this thing where this useless Chelle cannot seem to see that Iwobi is a minus one in this team – something that I and some other very discerning fans have been saying for years….YEARS O!, that Iwobi is a glaring short one, brings absolutely nothing worthwhile to the team and actually to the contrary makes the team very dangerously weak with his absolute no tackling football – that is ZERO CONTACT whatsoever ! I’ve been banging on about this for DONKEYS! but some idiots along with the so called “good coach/manager” that the fools at the NFF brought in due to their stealing, selfish and scheming ways could in no way see this very very obvious and glaring fact – Some goats will even come here and start insulting people who have a lot more sense than them and their whole families – like that absolute idiot @tayo or wtfe his stupid name is and a few others who I won’t even bother mention their irrelevant names – these idiots will come here and say it is hatred lmaaoo, in their myopic and sluggish minds, Iwobi is some great playmaker, midfielder – hehehehehehehe I’m laughing so hard that it hurts!
Can you all now see?? Complete twats!

I am flabbergasted that no one – NOT EVEN ONE PERSON here tonight has acknowledged the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM! No one has mentioned who’s error DIRECTLY led to the goal that Congo DR equalised with, a certain Iwobi!! – abi are you people for real??

If it is that you lot actually didn’t see it, in which case I wonder what you people were watching, and I suspect it’s the same thing you all have been watching all these years – the back of the TV and deceiving yourselves that you are watching football or that you know anything about football – I actually don’t blame you lot because even your so called manager too failed the test – I wonder what that Iwobi is doing that has blinded all these simpletons – whatever the dude is using must be very very strong indeed., but please go and wear your specs and find a real TV and watch again and you will see that it was Iwobi!

Iwobi took the ball in midfield, panicked and passed directly to a Congo player and that passage of play led directly to the goal! Ha! O mase o!

The whole hopes of a nation and you slow pokes destroyed it because you were too blind or too emotional to see that Iwobi should NEVER be anywhere near that team, and now you people have reaped what you sowed but unfortunately to the massive detriment of Nigeria!

If Congo had not equalised from Iwobi’s error, the chances are very much in favour of the fact that we would have won this game – I say the chances would have been in favour because even though Iwobi is the SE’s biggest problem, the truth is that he is not the only one – the list is long and it includes the NFF, Chelle, and some other below par players, and also why did Chelle take Osimhen off? He better have ben injured o! Because if he was not and he took him off then that in itself is a capital offence and deserves capital punishment lol.

But jokes aside, and after everything has been said and done – If we love ourselves and want to stand any chance going forward and counting up to 2030 – which is the next available opportunity. from now, then we better jettison the whole NFF and get serious minded, competent people in there, get rid of Chelle – he is not good enough – and his greatest sin is not recognising that Iwobi is a liability to the team, and then start a rebuild that only a very few of the current players will have any chance of being a part of – anything short of these simple and straightforward measure will mean that Nigeria (once a footballing great) will never ever be so again! Not with the likes of Chelle and Iwobi and the NFF as it stands now!

It is as they say – A word is enough for the wise!

      Long thing.

You are on point. If we don’t do something drastic and urgent, a time is coming that we won’t even qualify for AFCON.
        Disband NFF and SE NOW.

With all the strikers we have, ours is the weakest attack in the entire continent.
Peseiro knew this, so he focused on defense by deploying 3 center backs. He sure looks like a genius now! How on earth did he manage to get this rag tag team to the Afcon final?
Simple. Since the team is allergic to scoring, he set them up to stop the opponent from scoring.
Our back four has always been, and is still vulnerable. We are not good with possession, often turning the ball over, which puts even more pressure on an already suspect backline. And with Osimhen unavailable, we got even weaker.
We can’t rely on only Osimhen for goals anymore! We have to cast our net far and wide for good strikers. Rafiu Durosinmi and Gift Orban would have likely made a difference. We need to also get quality players in other areas. And Nwabali seems determined to send fans to the ER with his recklessness. Enough is enough. We need reliable, cool headed, sensible goalies.
Most important, NFF ONIGBESE must go. We need quality administrators. We need a real technical director. No charlatans please. Let’s have a sit down with FIFA and carry them along in the whole process. I’m sure FIFA will understand that the time has come for radical change in the way our football is managed.

Ndidi yab i swear, how can u captain a side and not be one of d 1st five penalty takers. Same with Onyeka, a premier league player. Frederick sef for play penalty as I’m sure dat boy would’ve buried his. Bassey just balloon d ball. Simon play penalty as him short lol. We can clearly see se, as bad as lookman and Chukwueze were, immediately they came off and simon and ejuke came in, DRC imposed dia will on us as we didn’t pose any threat. VO9 was a great miss today. But lets be realistic, Chelle has been with this team for less tgan 1yr but Desabre has been with DRC for atleast 3yrs (he took dem to d afcon in Ivory coast and thru d qualifiers fir dat afcon). Lets be patient with Chelles but he needs to infuse some new blood into our midfield. Nnadi, Ogbelu, Akinsanmiro, etc are some names to look at. We need wingers not in d mold of moses simon abeg and over runs d ball most times. There is dis young striker dat plays in seria A, i think for Genoa, dat boy plays like VO9, chases everything, someone like dat is what we need to understudy VO9 not d likes of Tolu abeg or Moffi or woteva. Just a thought

Gift Orban might be having a rethink about playing for Nigeria. Loool!
With the way we played today, he might as well cast his lot with Togo. He will get the star treatment there, and enjoy better training and recovery facilities.
Besides, they won’t owe his match bonuses. Lol!
If he still wants to play for Nigeria, that’s evidence of real love. Only real love will move a player with other options to chose Nigeria at the moment!
