–Professional football was introduced in Nigeria in 1990, with the launch of the league now known as the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). The non-Pro era lasted from 1972 to 1989.

–A club cannot register new players or coaches if it is in breach of an award or order relating to unpaid player entitlements, unless full compliance or a formal settlement is proven.
What is the Elite Player Scheme?
–Clubs may register up to two Elite Players—individuals deemed capable of adding exceptional value to the league. The NPFL may contribute financially to their remuneration.
What penalties apply for illegal or double registration of players?
–Players face suspension of up to one year, while clubs risk minimum fines of ₦1,000,000 and further disciplinary sanctions, according to the NPFL Framework 2023/2024.
